Recently we made released some enhancements to QuickSurveys including advanced piping and masking capabilities. In this post, we will show you how to program chained masking within QuickSurveys. Please note that these features are available for our premium members. You can upgrade your account here.

For those new to the terminology, piping is used to transfer data between a source question and a target question, where selected answers in the source question will be added to the question text of the target question. Masking is then used to transfer data between a source question and a target question, where selected answers in the source question will be added as answer options in the target question. Refer to this post if you need more basics on piping and masking

Chained masking is the ability to mask answers in a series of questions, i.e. Mask selected answers from Q1 into Q2, and mask the answers selected at Q2 into Q3.

When would I use this? Chained Masking is a great way to create a “funnel” between multiple questions, just as you would today between two questions. A common application would be the funnel from a “Brand Awareness” question into a “Brand Purchase” question and finally into a “Brand Purchase Most Often” question.

Here is exactly how to program this in your survey:

Enter Question 1 and then Question 2 on different pages.

On Question 2, go to the Piping and Masking feature.

Click on ‘masking’. Select Question 1.

Now answers that are selected in Question 1 will automatically pipe into Question 2.

Do this again with Question 3. Add Question 3, go to piping and masking, select Question 2.

Now when a respondent selects answers in Question 2, those answers will pipe into Question 3.

And it’s that easy!
