I hadn’t even finished Chapter One of Healing PCOS: A 21 Day Plan for Reclaiming Your Health and Life with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome before I was thinking: “At last, somebody who thinks the same way I do about PCOS.” By the end of the book I was declaring: “This is the book about PCOS I’ve been waiting for – for years.”

I’d say that’s a pretty glowing endorsement and that you should probably just pre-order it now (HB version released on 1st May on Amazon). But, perhaps you need to know a little bit more about why I feel this way about “Healing PCOS”, and whether it’s right for you.

Become a PCOS Diva

Let’s start with my initial response – that Amy Medling and I are on the same wavelength when it comes to PCOS. Amy brands herself as the PCOS Diva and encourages everybody to become a PCOS Diva too. This doesn’t mean making unreasonable demands and throwing tantrums a la Mariah Carey; in fact, this paragraph from the book sums it up.

Being a PCOS Diva is about acknowledging that your health is important, and you should be proactive in tackling your PCOS. No victim mindset, no deferring your own health needs because of others, and no feeling ashamed to follow the healing lifestyle you need.

Healing PCOS

To be proactive in healing PCOS, Amy takes a holistic approach and explains why this is preferable to relying on health care professionals. Endless drug regimens are not the answer to resolving your PCOS as they tend to treat symptoms rather than tackling the root cause. Amy believes you can not only improve your PCOS but thrive with it.

The first part of the book covers how you can think like and embrace your PCOS Diva by getting into the right mindset, listening to your body when it comes to food, exercise and stress, but also reaching beyond the obvious diet and exercise advice to other ways you can improve your quality of life.

“I’m newly diagnosed with PCOS – Is this book suitable for me?”

If you’re relatively new to PCOS or simply looking for a more comprehensive understanding of what’s going on with your body then Amy covers all the basics and more:

how and why we get PCOS

how to get a diagnosis

insulin resistance

chronic inflammation

vitamin & mineral deficiencies

supplements

She offers easy-to-understand medical explanations as to why certain foods, drinks and lifestyle choices are not good for women with PCOS. She explains adrenal fatigue and why exercise should be approached as self-care not punishment.

PCOS Diva 21 Day Plan

Part 2 of the book takes you through the more practical steps of achieving PCOS Diva-hood. This goes far beyond the traditional diet plan with recipes (although there are plenty of those included) and encourages you to embrace healthy daily rituals for your mind, body and soul that will boost your mindfulness, self-esteem and confidence.

There are many simple tasks she suggests and encourages to help you reach this healthier lifestyle without it feeling forced. Above all, Amy wants you to understand this is an ongoing process for life, and messing up does not mean failure – it’s all a learning and growing experience.

Who Shouldn’t Read This Book?

I began this review by saying that Amy thinks the same way I do about PCOS. The difference is that she has been far more consistent in creating the lifestyle she needs for good health and making it work. Reading her book made me realize a couple of the ways I’ve been letting myself (and my health) down. The main one being that I’m a people pleaser and that has taken priority over being a ME pleaser. So, I find it difficult to fight for what I want or need sometimes, and I find it even harder to say no (especially when it comes to family and food).

Amy tackles that in this book and so much more.

I would suggest the only women with PCOS who shouldn’t read this book are those who are unwilling to learn and change. You need to ask yourself what’s more important: building a healthy and sustainable lifestyle or playing the victim of PCOS (even if it’s unconsciously)?
