Wine Tasting September 3
Vintages buyers selected value wines for this large (more than 110 wines, and spirits) release.
Chile and Burgundy are well represented. A number of Chilean sauvignon blanc and chardonnay wines represent good value. The reds are fine, but less well chosen with the possible exception of Escudo Rojo and cabernet sauvignon from Arboleda. Burgundy wines are less eclectic. Simple Bourgogne chardonnays and two Chablis represent the white offerings.
For the reds only two were chosen.
In this release there are two malbec wines from Argentina, and one from Cahors (southwest France) where malbec is the principal red wine variety and is also known as cot.
The two Argentine malbecs are high in alcohol, heavily extracted, full-bodied, powerful and well made wines, the French version consisting of 100 per cent malbec is lower in alcohol, mid-weight, shows more finesse, and elegance.
This comparison shows clearly how terroir makes such a difference in taste, and texture.
Occasionally, even experienced tasters can mistake one grape variety with another.
Four Scotch whiskies, all from Glenfarclas distillery, taste fine, and whisky aficionados would benefit from their reasonable cost considering quality.
Here are my recommendations.
