About the foxtail chain

The foxtail chain is the basic chain of an unusual family of weaves that aren’t strictly maille at all. These weaves must be made from rings that are fused shut. The unique property of these weaves is that it is not necessary to open or close a single ring in the weaving. Instead, rings are pulled through each other, leaving small loops poking out that can be used to add the next ring. Fine silver is the metal of choice for this chain. Fine or pure silver is 99.9% silver.

Chemically, silver is not very reactive — it does not react with oxygen or water at ordinary temperatures, so does not easily form a silver oxide (tarnish). As the purity of the silver decreases, the problem of corrosion or tarnishing increases.
