There is lots of fun to go around during winter break, and lots of great coverage opportunities. I browsed through just a few books in our office that we received as Ideas That Fly submissions. Without fail, all four that I randomly chose had at least one double-page spread featuring stories and topics on winter break. This type of spread is a great way to present coverage that happens outside of school, which is important too. Check out some of the ideas and mods that your staff could implement in this year’s book.

Winter Weather
In Potomac Fall’s 2016 Legacy yearbook, the staff presented coverage of the massive snowfall their community received. A senior documented four days of the snow through photos and personal commentary. The staff asked a few students what they did, as they could not travel anywhere due to the snow. They even created a mod of snowfall statistics across counties in their area.
Favorite Christmas Ornaments
This was a unique addition to the spread in Walnut High School’s Cayuse yearbook. Three students shared which ornament on their Christmas tree was their favorite, and why.
Holiday Recipes
A mod in Redondo Union’s Pilot yearbook included one student’s family recipe for tamales that they make each Christmas. It’s an interesting addition to the spread, a unique type of holiday recipe and included one more student in the process. Win!
Keep your eyes open for all sorts of winter break activities that could make for compelling content in the yearbook. And not only that, but have a plan on how to receive students’ content when everyone returns in January. Invite the student body to share stories (with great photos!) using eShare. And, plan to interview students and/or ask several students the same question to create interesting mods. Happy winter break! Don’t forget to relax, busy staffers.
