First-person shooters (FPS) are perhaps one of the most prominent genres in gaming. This is in large part, thanks to juggernaut series like Call of Duty and Halo. However, as time has gone on, there has been a shift in how these games are approached. FPS games that are praised for their single-player offerings have become rare, with recent examples including Doom (2016) and Titanfall 2. Instead, the genre has shifted towards multiplayer-only focused games, such as Overwatch and Apex Legends. In addition, games that truly push the genre forward have also been less apparent.
