In this section of the guide to the My Private Site plugin, we will show you how to make your site private, enable registrations, and more.
Step 1) Login to the WordPress Dashboard.
Step 2) From the left-hand sidebar of the Dashboard navigate to Settings -> Private Site.
A warning that the site is not private appears after first activation of the plugin until the Administrator visits the plugin’s Settings page.
Make Site Private
Step 3) If you place a checkmark in the Private Site checkbox, this plugin creates a Private Site, by ensuring that site visitors login before viewing your web site.
The only things visible to anyone not logged in, including Search Engines, are:
Your site’s WordPress Login page.
Any selections in the Visible Exclusions section below.
Any non-WordPress components of your web site, such as HTML, PHP, ASP or other non-WordPress web page files.
Images and other media and text files, but only when accessed directly by their URL, or from a browser’s directory view, if available.
To see your site, each visitor will need to be registered as a User on your WordPress site.
They will also have to enter their Username and Password on the WordPress login screen.
For this example, this field was checked.
Step 4) Click the Save Changes button to save any changes.
Allow Self-Registration
If you want Users to be able to Register themselves on a Private Site, there are two settings involved.
First is the WordPress Setting that actually allows new Users to self-register. It is shown here as a convenience, however:
– This is the same Membership field displayed on the General Settings Admin panel.
– Clicking the Save Changes button will update its value.
Second, is a Setting (Reveal Registration Page) for this plugin, to make the WordPress User Registration page visible to Visitors who are not logged on. Since Users cannot log on until they are Registered, this Setting must be selected (check mark) for Self-Registration.
For this example, no changes were made.
Landing Location
Step 5) Determine what do you want your visitors to see immediately after they login.
For most Private Sites, the default Return to same URL setting works best, as it takes visitors to where they would have been had they already been logged on when they clicked a link or entered a URL, just as if they hit the browser’s Back button twice and then the Refresh button after logging in.
Step 6) Complete the fields as outlined below:

Where to after Login?
Click to select the appropriate location where users will be forwarded to after they login.
For this example, Go to Site Home was selected.
B.
Specific URL
Enter a specific URL if you selected an option other than Return to same URL.
For this example, http://mysite.com was entered.
C.
Apply to wp-login.php?
Place a checkmark in this checkbox if you want the Landing Location to apply when a wp-login.php URL is clicked or typed without &redirect_to= after it?
For this example, this field was checked.
Custom Login
Step 6) If you have a Custom Login page at a different URL than the standard WordPress Login location, then you will need to specify it here. Otherwise, visitors will be redirected to the standard WordPress Login.
Even with the Custom Login page selected, the standard WordPress login page will still appear in certain circumstances, such as logging into the Admin panels.
For this example, no changes were made.
Visible Exclusions
Step 7) Complete the fields as outlined below:

Site Home Always Visible?
Place a checkmark in this checkbox if you always want your Home Page visible.
For this example, this field was checked.
E.
Add URL to be Always Visible
If you want a URL to always be visible, enter the full path to the appropriate page/post in this textbox. For example, http://nysite.com/.
For this example, this field was left blank.
F.
Select here if URL is a Prefix
Place a checkmark in this checkbox so that anything that begins with this URL Prefix will be always be visible.
For this example, this field was left blank.
G.
Current Visible URL Entries
To add a Visible URL Entry, fill in the fields above.
For this example, this field was left blank.
Advanced Settings
The Allow Landing Location for Custom Login pages shown below will, under some circumstances, lock you out of your own WordPress site and prevent Visitors from viewing your site.
If you are locked out of your site, you will have to rename or delete the /wp-contents/plugins/jonradio-private-site/ folder with FTP or a File Manager provided with your web hosting.
For this example, this field was left unchecked.
Step 8) Click the Save Changes button to save any changes.
Step 9) To test your settings, log out of the Admin Panel.
You may want to spend some time modifying the settings so your Private Site works the way you want.
