Three people were killed and five others were injured, some of them seriously, in a multi-vehicle car accident on the Cross Bronx Expressway. According to an NBC New York news report, police said a tractor-trailer on the eastbound side of the highway stopped abruptly near Webster Avenue because of traffic ahead. A pickup truck behind the 18-wheeler also stopped, but another tractor-trailer behind the pickup could not stop in time and caused the chain-reaction collision.
Fatal Chain-Reaction Crash
The second tractor-trailer hit the pickup truck and a Toyota Corolla, launching the smaller car onto the center divide of the highway and trapping the pickup truck under the tractor-trailer. Three men in the pickup were pronounced dead at the scene. Two other passengers in that truck were transported to an area hospital in serious condition along with one victim in the Toyota.
The tractor-trailer drivers were not injured. Police don’t believe alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash. The investigation is ongoing. Our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone who was affected by this horrific chain-reaction crash.
Common Causes of Multi-Vehicle Crashes
There are a number of reasons why multi-vehicle crashes occur. Here are few common causes:
• Excessive speed: When drivers exceed the posted speed limit or fail to drive at a speed that is safe given the traffic, roadway or weather conditions, chain-reaction crashes may occur.
• Fatigued driving: When a driver dozes off at the wheel, there is a danger of the vehicle drifting out of the lane or rear-ending the vehicle ahead.
• Impaired driving: Driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs alters perception and impairs judgment. Intoxicated drivers are in danger of causing devastating collisions.
• Distracted driving: Drivers who engage in talking, texting, browsing the internet, taking selfies, posting on social media or other distractions can contribute to a multi-vehicle collision. Even activity such as eating, drinking, grooming or talking to a passenger while driving could be potentially hazardous.
What Should You Do?
