Position: Fellow – 2017 Cohort



Position Summary

The Women’s World Banking Fellowship Program enables future global leaders in financial inclusion and women’s economic empowerment to experience the challenges and rewards of contributing to an organization that works diligently to create financial opportunities for low-income women. Over a two-year period, the Fellow will have the opportunity to rotate across different departments for periods of 6-12 months each and work with different teams to deliver solutions for our organization and our partner institutions.

About Women’s World Banking

Women’s World Banking is the global non-profit devoted to giving more low-income women access to the financial tools and resources essential to their security and prosperity. For more than 35 years we have worked with financial institutions to show them the benefit of investing in women as clients, and as leaders. We equip these institutions to meet women’s needs through authoritative market research, leadership training, sustainable financial products and consumer education. Headquartered in New York, Women’s World Banking works with 40 institutions in 29 countries with a reach of 16 million women to create access to finance on a greater scale than ever before.

Fellowship rotations may include:

Product Development:

conduct consumer research to identify the financial behaviors and needs of low-income women in diverse markets;

work with partner institutions to develop, test, and roll out financial products and services designed to serve low-income women (e.g., savings, credit, microinsurance); and

explore the potential of digital and fintech solutions to expand financial access to un- and underserved populations;

Leadership & Diversity:

support the development and execution of Women’s World Banking’s classroom training programs in leadership and diversity; and

conduct cutting-edge research into topics related to women’s leadership, e.g., the link between women’s leadership and the performance of financial institutions in emerging markets, or the leadership profile needed to serve low-income women;

Research, Monitoring & Evaluation:

conduct market intelligence and other research to inform the organization’s knowledge of priority markets and identify emerging trends and critical questions in women’s financial inclusion; and

collect and analyze qualitative and quantitative data to assess the impact of our work across all project areas;

Development & Strategic Partnerships:

cultivate and manage relationships with donors and strategic partners; and

develop presentations, concept notes, and proposals that clearly convey the impact and importance of Women’s World Banking’s work in order to raise the necessary financial and in-kind support to ensure competitive and effective program delivery;

Knowledge & Influence:

catalyze greater scale of impact for our work by engaging a broad range of partners from diverse sectors in replicating and amplifying solutions for women’s financial inclusion; an

leverage our always-expanding body of knowledge to position Women’s World Banking as the leading global nonprofit advancing women’s financial inclusion, including by supporting the development and execution of major events;

Women’s World Banking Asset Management:

support the management of the Women’s World Banking Capital Partners Fund, a unique women-focused impact investment fund, by:

appraising equity investment opportunities;

preparing investment proposals and valuation analyses;

negotiating transaction documents for win-win outcomes;

preparing reports to investors; and

managing deliverables of third party service providers;

Strategy:

support the organization’s transition into the new 2017-2021 strategic plan by working across teams to advance key components of the transition;

ensure continuous alignment of our work across projects with the organization’s 10-year strategic vision; and

conduct research and analysis on priority strategic initiatives;

Finance:

ensure the organization’s financial sustainability and growth through financial management, reporting and investing; and

work across teams to structure various initiatives and project coordination;

Human Resources:

contribute to the ongoing HR strategy and execution in areas of business acumen, communication, critical evaluation, relationship management, ethical practice, global and cultural effectiveness, and leadership and navigation; and

direct contribution to the shaping of HR initiatives in the areas of performance management, process management/business efficiencies, and organizational culture change management practices;

Special Projects:

the Fellow may have the opportunity to work on additional special projects beyond the areas described above, e.g., priority initiatives of the President’s Office

The Fellow’s rotations will be determined through an ongoing dialogue between the Fellow and the organization’s leadership team, based on the organization’s needs and the Fellow’s interests and expertise.

Location of Work

The Fellow will be based in our New York City office. Travel in the field may be required.

Duration of Work
This position extends for two years, from June 2017 through June 2019.

Required Qualifications

Eager to contribute to an innovative organization leading global change in women’s financial inclusion;

Bachelor’s degree;

A minimum of two years of work experience or a relevant graduate degree in business or public administration, international development, economics, or other relevant field;

Fluency in written and spoken English; and

Ability to legally work in the United States

Preferred Qualifications

Effective collaborator in diverse teams and with partners across different cultural contexts (international experience a plus);

Experience and a level of comfort in working across departments and outside a typical job description;

Highly self-motivated and able to work independently;

Continuously seeks new challenges and learning opportunities;

Commitment to delivering high-quality results (but recognition that sometimes failure is a part of the learning process);

Excellent written and verbal communication skills;

Empathy towards and commitment to increasing opportunity for low-income communities around the world;

Experience with and understanding of financial inclusion, women’s empowerment, and/or international development applied beyond just academic projects; and

Fluency in Spanish, French, Arabic, or other foreign language
