Alan Shearer believes that Gareth Southgate should play three at the back against Spain.
Southgate is expected to be named England manager following the friendly at Wembley and former Three Lions striker Shearer says it is a good opportunity for him to experiment with his squad.
Gary Cahill, John Stones and Eric Dier all started the game against Scotland on Friday night and all have been used in a three-man defence in club football in recent weeks.
Shearer says that it is time to see the system used on the international stage, as it will offer England a “plan B”.
He wrote in his column for The Sun: “Chelsea have been playing with three central defenders since the second half of their match at Arsenal and have not conceded a goal in the Premier League since.”
Shearer also believes that a system of three at the back would suit the currently available defenders.
He said: “Gary Cahill has looked comfortable in this system for Antonio Conte at Stamford Bridge and it could also suit John Stones in the same way as David Luiz has looked really comfortable for Chelsea.”
Despite discussions about the formation, Shearer does have another concern with the England team.

Gareth Southgate is the right man for England, says Aitor Karanka
The Newcastle legend, who now works as a Match of the Day pundit, insists that England could have been made to pay for their sloppiness against Scotland.
And he is worried that Spain will be able to pick them off.
Shearer said: “Whoever plays in defence and whatever system is used, we cannot afford to keep losing the ball so easily otherwise the team will be punished.”
He added: “England got away with it.”
