Recent Honors
Congratulations to Donna Baier Stein. Her new novel, The Silver Baron's Wife, will be published September 15 by Serving House Books, and is available for pre-order from Amazon. Join her email list to find out about special offers. The Silver Baron's Wife is based on the real-life story of Baby Doe Tabor and her family's dramatic reversals of fortune during America's 19th-century Gilded Age. The book launch will take place at 7:00 p.m. on September 21 at the Bernardsville Public Library, 1 Anderson Hill Road, Bernardsville, NJ 07924. She will also be reading at 6:30 p.m. on September 28 at the Lake County Public Library, 1115 Harrison Ave., Leadville, CO, and at 7:00 p.m. on October 23 at KGB Bar, 85 E. 4th Street, New York, NY, with Ronna Weinberg. Congratulations to Warwick Newnham. His essay "Trashman Loves Maree" was longlisted for the 2016 Prize for Experimental Nonfiction from The Lifted Brow, a Melbourne-based publisher and literary journal. The most recent deadline for this award was May 29, with a top prize of A$5,000. In other news, his story "Jabbin Jabbin Kirroo Ka" was published in Westerly Magazine, Issue 61.1. This issue's theme was a celebration of Australia's Indigenous writers and culture. His story "Mother" was included in the anthology Secrets & Dreams (Kind of a Hurricane Press, 2016).
Congratulations to Ruth Hill. Her poem "Did You Hear Singing?" won a third prize in the Dancing Poetry Contest from Artists Embassy International. The most recent deadline for this contest, with prizes up to $100 and a choreographed performance of the winning poems, was May 15. "Spirit of Iron, Heart of Gold" won second prize in the Spring 2016 Alabama State Poetry Society contest with the theme of "Overcoming Adversity". ASPS contests run twice a year, with prizes on various themes up to $75 for members, $50 non-members; the next deadline is September 24. Her poems "Mary, Mary" and "Stained Glass" were published online May 2016 in British Columbia's Royal City Literary Arts Society e-zine, and her poems "Agape" and "Vigil Aunties" were published there in September. "What Stops Us" and "Questions without Answers" were published in the Voices Israel 2016 Anthology. "The Doppler Effect" was published in Lucidity Poetry Journal, Fall 2016. FreeXpresSion of Australia has chosen Ruth as a monthly feature author for October, and will reprint a half dozen of her poems. "Beziers" will be published in the 2016 Paragram Prize anthology, Paradox.
Congratulations to Ginny Albert. Her romance novel Which Man was recently re-issued as an e-book by UrbanEdge Publishing, a Georgia-based small press that is currently open to manuscripts in the genres of drama, self-help, romance/chick-lit, YA, and crime/mystery.

G.G. Silverman's prose-poem "Critical Mass" was published in The Seventh Wave, Issue #3. The theme of this issue was "Who Gets to Belong?" Visit her website to find out about her comic horror novel, Vegan Teenage Zombie Huntress, a finalist for the 2015 Winning Writers North Street Book Prize.
Bob Van Laerhoven's short story "Paint It, Black" was included in the anthology Brussels Noir, edited by Michael Dufranne (Akashic Books, 2016). It is an English-language edition of Bruxelles Noir, first published in France. The Polish edition will be out in early 2017 from Editions Claroscuro. Akashic's well-regarded Noir Series publishes anthologies of crime fiction set in different international cities.
Bill DeArmond's story "Wearing a Dead Man's Bones" will be published next month in Diodati, a magazine of modern Gothic and speculative fiction. He thanks Winning Writers for pointing him to this publication.
Roberta Beary was the featured author for August in the Cornell University Mann Library's Daily Haiku series. Each day, a different one of her poems appeared on their search engine page.
J. Paul Cooper's story "Just a Microwave Dinner" was featured in Episode #55 of No Extra Words: The Flash Fiction Podcast. His story is the second in the episode, beginning at 8 minutes and 40 seconds into the broadcast.
Tricia McCallum's poem "At Rest" was published on August 15 at Poetry Breakfast.
