Dear Fellow Dog Lovers,
It is the first day of Fall and a lovely day it was at Willamette Humane Society walking shelter dogs. Here are the ones who were adopted this week and are happily settling in with their new forever families.
We’re a happy duo waiting for you to adopt us!
There were several new dog arrivals for me to photograph on Sunday. Among them was this bonded pair, Lillie (left) and Missie, who are stealing the hearts of everyone at the shelter. This was the first sight I caught of them when Caroline brought them out for their “photo shoot.”
These girls are absolutely adorable. Lillie is a six-year-old Shih Tzu mix and Missie is an eight-year-old Bichon Frise/Shih Tzu mix. They are house-trained, have lived with cats(!) and although they haven’t lived with kids, they have enjoyed them when they’ve visited. These girls must go home together, but they will be so easy to live with. They both are cuddlers and walk well on leash. Some walks around the neighborhood, a few tasty treats, and snoozes with you in the evening is all they ask for. What a delightful pair! It was really fun taking pictures of them with Caroline and Laslo.
They loved my hot dog bits.

I’m still working on improving my skills and having adventures with Jolene!
Opie had a fun morning on Sunday continuing to work with Jolene on his dog skills.
He’s almost got “roll over” down!
After some hard skill work, it was time to chill.
On Saturday Jolene took Opie to Bush Park and he was perfectly behaved! Here’s what she wrote about their adventure: “I took Opie for respite this morning to Bush Park. He was terrific! We walked the perimeter of the park twice, and in between walks just sat and watched the activity. Lots of dogs and foot traffic, and races were being held for school kids. He was such a good boy. Was calm, walked very well on leash, and listened appropriately to “leave it” which really was only for the benefit of the squirrels. He barked once at a couple of big dogs, but after that he calmly watched them walk by. This was a very positive outing. He was enjoying himself and was very relaxed. We had to do some refresher drills on loose leash walking before we left the shelter for the park, but after that he was a joy to be with. He received several compliments on how pretty he was… I did, however, make the mistake of leaving a roll of paper towels in the backseat and he thought that was the greatest toy ever!!!!”
Opie came to WHS on June 28th. He was adopted once, but while Opie enjoys hanging out, he is no couch potato and the home wasn’t the right fit. Opie is an almost two-year-old Plothound mix. His manners continue to improve under the wings of Jolene and Linda. He is the perfect dog for an active person, someone who likes to exercise with a best friend. Opie’s adoption package includes a WHS training class called Check In and Chill Out, a great way for him and his new person to bond. If you’re looking for a high-energy, fun, and eager partner, Opie may be just whom you’ve been waiting for! He’s a favorite of many at the shelter who are so anxious for him to finally be found by his person.
I’m looking for a special person who will love me even with my quirks.
Henry is an eight-year-old Chihuahua mix. When I went to his kennel to get him for pictures, he was curled up on his bed looking anxious. I sat down beside him and he let me clip on a leash and willingly, though slowly, went outside with me. Once in the yard, he wanted to climb into my lap. Henry gets very attached to his person and doesn’t like to be alone. He needs a quiet home without kids, cats, or other dogs. It would be ideal if his person was home most of the time. This sweet senior may have a few quirks, but when he looks into your eyes with hope, it touches your heart. I’m hoping that he’ll be found by just the right person very soon. Marianne spent some time with Henry, too, and like me, she fell for him.
I’m looking for a family who loves to play fetch because I really, really love it!
Marbles is a four-year-old Whippet mix and has become one of volunteer Francis’ favorites. This girl LOVES to play fetch and is looking for a family who will throw the ball for her to bring back to them…over and over. This girl needs an active lifestyle. Hiking or running with her person would be great. She also would enjoy WHS training classes since she is smart, eager, and treat-motivated. Marbles needs a home without cats or other dogs. She has lived with children well, but her exuberance might be overwhelming to smaller kids. Marbles can be shy at first meeting, especially around men, but warms up quickly and is soon ready to chase after a tennis ball.
They call me the Character of the Shelter. I can’t understand why.
Penny is a one-year-old Pit Bull Terrier mix who keeps everyone in stitches with her goofy personality. She is just about the perfect dog. She is house-trained, eager to please, walks well on leash, and will keep you laughing. She’d love to come to WHS training classes where she’ll learn new skills, like not to jump in excitement when greeting you. Here she was on Sunday with Daniel and Marianne, having a great time.
This is Penny’s I-haven’t-had-any-treats-since-forever pathetic look. Don’t fall for it!
She loves to roll, hoping it’ll get her more treats.
Ball dog? Not so much.
But dancing? Absolutely!
She tries to make her friends feel better.
And she’s very easily distracted!
This girl is a gem and everyone loves her!
I admit I need some more training, but we could take WHS classes together and that would be a blast for both of us!
Icabaud is a two-year-old Pit Bull Terrier mix who loves life and shows it in his high-spirited energy. His excitement sometimes needs some impulse control which he is working on improving. He will need an active family willing to give him the attention he needs and the positive reward-based training that he enjoys. He can be quite picky about his dog friends, so would need to meet any potential siblings. This young, happy boy thoroughly enjoyed his time on Sunday with Laslo, one of his favorite people, as you’ll see below.
Caroline’s Pick of the Week!
This week Caroline picked a brand-new arrival, Chuck, a two-year-old purebred Treeing Walker Coonhound who was transferred to WHS from one of our shelter partners in hopes he will find the home he deserves. Caroline and I met Chuck this afternoon when we went to his kennel to take him out for pictures. He was so timid, lying curled up on his bed. He was too nervous to take any treats, but let me clip a leash on him and slowly walked outside with us. Once in the yard, he relaxed some, but with everything so new, he will need a little time to feel at home. Caroline and I both really liked his gentle demeanor. He felt the best when he was close to Caroline while I snapped pictures.
Because he is shy, older kids or just adults and a quiet home would suit this boy the best. Here’s what Dog Breed Info Center says about Chuck’s breed: (http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/treeingwalkercoonhound.htm) “They thrive on consistent and ample attention. The Treeing Walker will be high-strung without enough mental and physical exercise. Loving and eager to please, the Treeing Walker is intelligent, skilled and confident.” While Chuck isn’t confident at the moment, once in a stable home, we’re sure his personality will shine.
I’m hoping to find my new family soon!
Another newbie today was Tiva, a four-year-old Australian Cattle Dog mix from the same shelter as Chuck. Marianne couldn’t wait for me to meet this sweetheart and I now know why. Tiva is a wonderful girl. She loved my treats which she took politely, knows some commands, and smiled when asked! She scored very well on her behavior assessment and is listed PG 8+. I don’t know her well yet, but I sure do like her just as much as Marianne does.
Update!
Carbone/Arlo
I first met Carbone when he was a stray pup in January of 2011. Everyone who met this bundle of energy fell in love with him and he with them. We guessed his age at about 10 months. He scored perfectly on his behavior assessment and was listed as PG, can’t get much better than that. Here are some pictures I took of him at that time. What a cutie!
In April, 2011, Paul and Carol came to the shelter to look for a new family member. They had lost their beloved Pit mix to old age a few months before and were now ready for another dog to love. And it was love at first sight. Carbone became Arlo and off he went to begin the life every shelter dog dreams of. Over the years Carol and Paul have kept in touch and, as Aunt Martha, I’ve so enjoyed seeing Arlo at various WHS events.
A few weeks ago, Carol, Paul and Arlo invited me over to their house for lunch. I had great fun picking out a few new toys and bag of treats to take and I arrived at their home Monday afternoon and was enthusiastically greeted by Arlo who couldn’t wait to see what I had brought him. The afternoon was a delight visiting and watching Arlo play. Here are a few pictures from our time together.
While the adults ate lunch, Arlo loved the rope toy, the egg ball and the “fluff bone” that I brought him.
The “fluff bone” soon met its demise under the table, but it was such fun while it lasted!
Then it was time to go outside. I was fascinated by Arlo’s unique version of fetch. First Arlo gets his little blue ball firmly in his mouth. Then Paul throws the huge red ball toward Carol. Arlo races to Carol just as the red ball reaches her.
Arlo gives the red ball a quick “bonk” with the blue one, runs around Carol and rushes back toward Paul, trying to beat the red ball that Carol has now thrown back to Paul.
This routine is repeated over and over again until Arlo is exhausted and ready to relax.
Then it’s back up on the porch for a tender moment with Carol, then Arlo is ready for some serious snoozing.
I loved my time with this special family. Arlo is a very happy and well-loved boy.
