Dates and times

Each of the sessions will last approximately two hours.  Further information about the content of each session is displayed under the table below.  If you would like to arrange a bespoke session for yourself or a group of colleagues please contact Abi Ball directly.

Introduction to Turnitin

Turnitin is a web-based tool that supports students in the development of good academic practice when preparing written work for assessment. This text-matching tool allows academic staff to check students' work for improper use of sources or potential plagiarism by comparing it against continuously up-dated databases (including web-pages and student work). Turnitin produces an 'Originality Report' for each submitted piece of work which indicates all the matches in the student assignment to the web-based sources on its database, and thus can provide academic staff with the opportunity to help students develop proper citation methods as well as to safeguard students' academic integrity. The session covers how to create and add a Turnitin assignment to your VLE course.

Electronic Marking and Feedback Using GradeMark

There is accumulating evidence that electronic methods of marking student assignments and providing them with feedback on their work can be more effective and efficient than traditional paper-based methods. They also come with costs and compromises.

This workshop will be of interest to all those staff involved in the design and management of student assignments who would like to consider how to adopt electronic marking and feedback in their practice.

These sessions will be practical and hands-on, exploring how to use the tool, with interactive discussions of pros and cons of electronic marking and feedback. The workshops will also consider short case study examples of how colleagues are currently using Grademark.

Objectives:

By end of session participants should be able to:

Identify the pros and cons of electronic marking and feedback in their practice

Use Grademark to grade and provide feedback on a student assignment

Import and use Quickmark comment sets

Develop and add a rubric to an assignment

Consider how team based approaches might lead to more efficient and effective marking and feedback practice

Consider possible uses of the mobile Turnitin app

What you need to bring:

An example of some marking criteria that you use (or might use), examples of common kinds of feedback you give to students, and an iPad if you have one (to try out the iPad app).
