TV CREW ALMOST CATCHES ON FIRE Many of us watch in awe of the massive fire that engulfs the Squirrel Mountain Valley neighborhood in Lake Isabella California. We pray for torrential rains to scuff out the blaze. KTLA TV CH 5 reporter Steve Kuzj and cameraman Victor Vargas finish their live shot for the 11 pm news when flames come within about 30 yards of their van. Reporter Steve Kuzj and cameraman Victor Vargas scramble to get their equipment into the truck and beat a hasty retreat to get away safely.

1996 THE YEAR THAT CHANGES RADIO FOREVER During my time as a DJ on Country KILT FM Houston, TX from 1991-96 a lot goes on. The Telcom Law of 1996 opens radio wide open to many vultures. Bankers gobble up as many radio stations as possible. In 1995, KILT FM’s Westinghouse grabs CBS Radio, plus Infinity. By 1996 things are so bad that is my final year in radio. Clear Channel has over 1500 radio stations. Capstar merges into co-owned Chancellor Media and later becomes part of Clear Channel.

CBS RADIO IN GRIDLOCK During my two times as a DJ on KILT FM here in Houston, TX a whole lot transpires. In January 1981 Album Rock KILT FM flips to Country and quickly rises to #1 and remains in the top spot for over 10 years. In 1995, Westinghouse (Group W) buys CBS Radio. In 1996, Group W falls under the CBS Radio umbrella. That’s when I exit KILT FM for the final time. In 2016, third-largest radio group CBS Radio worth about $2.9 billion goes on sale – but no takers for its 117 radio stations in 26 major markets.

BILL BRAGG [Voice of BIG TEX 2002-12 The State Fair of Texas] (Dallas-Richardson, TX) Subject: KPCN (730) Reunion. Hi Jim: Please, please let me know when & where the KPCN Reunion will take place! My time spent at what was then a remote portion of Grand Prairie, TX were some of the happiest times of my career! (After dark, you could NOT see a light in any direction in those days and we didn’t even have running water) There was a Well out back that supplied the water that flushed the toilet; and remember the sign by the wash basin that read “Don’t Drink This Water”? Keep up the good work; You’re a “National Treasure”! Bill Bragg (www.billbragg.com) 47 years in Radio & TV Broadcasting – The Voice of BIG TEX 2002 -2012 The State Fair of Texas=

JAY WEAVER [KLBK-1360/KCUL-1540/KPCN-730/KBUY-1540] (DFW-Hurst, TX) Subject: KPCN (730) Reunion. Jim, I went to KPCN in September, 1968. Roy Lemons, Manager at KBUY fired me for being late for work. I had been at KBUY, actually KCUL since December, 1966. It became KBUY in January of 1967. In August, 1968, I got married and a month later he fired me. BUT, the first of November he hired me back. I was told I could stay as long as I wanted to. Ended up there until 1972. I exited radio in 1973 and built homes for 35 years. In 2003, I went back to radio at KRLD for about two months. I then went to Bridgeport to KBOC, an FMer and was there for a year. Finally, I was at KMNY (formerly KXOL) for a month. Jay Weaver

JAY WALKER [CBS Radio Dallas/KJKK FM/Infinity KTSA-550/KTFM FM/Own Jay Walker Prod/Jay Walker Competitive Audio consultant 40 Plus Years In Radio] (Dallas-McKinney, TX) Subject: On my soapbox. When I first started helping out with engineering problems they (KPYK-1570) were still running ancient Autogram console and a couple of Gates cart machines. Over the years as I could I got them a nice Pacific Recorders BMX console, ITC 99 cart machines, updated the processing with an Inovonics MAP II and Denon CD players. It’s probably one of the better equipped daytimers around and it all came from my junk box HAHA

TRIVIA ANSWER: On July 20, 1872, Mahlon Loomis receives a patent for wireless technology which heralds the beginning of radio. He is earliest inventor of wireless communication (patent #129,971). Mahlon claims to transmit signals in October 1866 between two Blue Ridge Mountaintops 14 miles apart in Virginia using kites as antennas. Loomis is the first wireless telegrapher. Dentist Mahlon Loomis also invents artificial teeth (patent #10,847 May 2, 1854).

LESLIE WAYNE HODGES [ex KRCS DJ] (Lake Livingston, TX) In 1995 bought Lynn’s book; ” Last Great Days Of Radio” Lynn talks of his Days inside WACO AM Radio in the 1980’s. I was with WACO AM April to May 1976, Ron Crowder the new P.D. Had just come in from KSWS in Lawton. While Ron Crowder is airing Paul Harvey at 12:09 p.m. Ron hires me for weekends that in two weeks will go full time Midnight to Six. That changed two weeks later when as Ron tells me in The production room that a friend of one of the guys rode in on a tricycle from Victoria and he will now be full time after midnight. Ron says since he is new in WACO he wants to get along with the guys and that I can remain weekends. So why is Ron Crowder in Waco and not still in Lawton?
