In the past, immigration has been one of those topics that always had certain states seeing red. But that might not be the case with the 2016 election cycle. Blue appears to be bubbling up in unlikely places, painting traditionally red states a more tolerant shade of purple. And nowhere is this more apparent than in Arizona.

A state typically known for its strict immigration laws, Arizona has experienced a swell in the number of registered Democratic voters, thanks to one very unlikely candidate.

Happy #CincoDeMayo! The best taco bowls are made in Trump Tower Grill. I love Hispanics!

Yep. We can thank Donald Trump. More specifically, we can thank the tireless efforts of local activists who have been so motivated by Trump’s hateful rhetoric they’ve been able to increase the number of registered Democratic voters in Arizona. Nearly 100,000 voters have registered since the 2010 election, which is no small feat considering that getting people to vote Democrat in places like Arizona is like convincing someone to piss on a dumpster fire. It just feels like it won’t help. But if you get enough people pissing on that fire, things just might work out in your favor.

Arizona is proof that a local, concentrated effort can swing the vote, as long as people remember that their vote always counts.
