Is it raining? We know it doesn’t happen often in Albuquerque but it does happen from time to time. You might be tempted to skip walking your dog. The rain does not have to keep you from walking your dog. We have some tips for you to walk your dog successfully and safely.

Let’s talk about rainwater first. The water in the puddles is not safe for your dog to drink! I can harbor all kinds of dirt and bacteria that are not safe for your dog to ingest. Don’t let them drink out of the puddles when you are out for your walk.

Following up on the rainwater you should be aware of the puddles. Puddles can be much deeper than they appear. While they may be fun to splash in you never know what is in them. There can be many hazards in that muddy water that could injure your dog. Even though it may be fun just don’t let your dog run and splash in the puddles.

Keep your walk on the short side. If it is raining you can choose to do a shorter walk that day. Your dog still needs to walk to release some excess energy. Shorten it up for that day. A short walk is better than no walk.

A couple of follow up points. Doggie raincoats are available these days. They can help to keep your dog from getting soaking wet. These are a great way to have them enjoy the walk without all the rain pounding directly on them. Just a FYI doggie rainboots are also available. When you come in from your walk grab a towel and dry your dog off well. Even if they wore a raincoat, they could still get legs and stomachs wet.

Your top priority is safety when walking your dog. If it is pouring you may forgo a walk that day. Don’t let light rain keep you from going out though.
