Like with any electronic device, knowing how to properly care for and maintain your e-cigarette is essential in keeping it running the way it’s supposed to. The best vaping experience doesn’t just depend on e-juice flavor and vaping technique. To keep your e-cigarette running longer, pay attention to proper cleaning and charging practices, too.

Choose the Right Juice

E-juice contains propylene glycol and/or vegetable glycerin. Along with nicotine and flavoring, those are the only four ingredients that should make up the e-juice you’re using. If you can’t find an ingredients list or verify that the juice is from a reputable source, look elsewhere for e-juice.

Deciding how much propylene glycol and vegetable glycerine you like is a good way to get a great vaping experience from your e-cigarette. If you’re more into flavor, propylene glycol can’t be beat. The widest range of flavors are available from juices made with propylene glycol, and they’ll taste the most like what they’re named. Vegetable glycerine, on the other hand, makes more vapor, but at the expense of the throat hit. Choosing between PG or VG depends on your smoking preferences.

Take note that if you use e-juice with high vegetable glycerine concentrations, you’ll have to spend more time cleaning your device since it gunks up the coils much faster. This is one of the ways to wear out your machine if you’re not careful, so keep that in mind while selecting e-juice.

Fill the Tank Properly

Knowing where and how to fill your e-cigarette is an important step in keeping the device functioning well. Filling the tank isn’t quite as simple as opening the e-juice container and pouring it in. First, make sure you’re not putting the e-juice into the tube in the center of the tank. It’ll end up leaking all over the place if you do, and you won’t have much left to vape.

Some people remove the tank completely before filling it. This isn’t very difficult, because your tank is made to be removable should you need to replace it. It has the added bonus of controlling and containing leaks; if you mess up filling the tank while it’s out of the device, spills are confined and the e-juice doesn’t get all over the e-cigarette’s other components.

The tank can hold a certain amount, and you should not fill it more than that; your e-cigarette instructions will let you know what that amount is. Don’t go above it, because it’ll start to leak. If you tilt your e-juice at an angle and aim it at the side of the tank, you can slowly let the juice move down the sides of the tank, which helps you stay away from that tube in the center and allows you better control over how much juice you’re filling.

Clean Your Hardware

Even the most careful vapers may experience leaks occasionally, which is why it’s so important to clean your hardware regularly. When the e-juice seeps into the battery, it damages the battery’s ability to charge, and eventually makes the battery stop working all together. You’ll notice the battery stops charging efficiently and loses power very quickly if you don’t clean your device regularly.

The liquid can also accumulate on the atomizer, which pollutes your flavor choices and affects the atomizer’s ability to deliver good vapor.

To clean your device, you need to take it apart. Unscrew the components and separate them. With a paper towel, wipe down the atomizer. You can also blow into the tank if it doesn’t come apart enough to completely expose the atomizer.

If you get in the habit of cleaning the tank every time you charge your vaping device, you’ll prevent a considerable amount of liquid build-up that can severely damage the battery. Some people soak their devices in hot water, but most manufacturers don’t recommend this cleaning method. If you don’t feel like wiping the components with a dry Q-tip or paper towel is enough, try dipping the Q-tip in alcohol first.

Maintain Your Vaping Device

After you’ve cleaned your atomizer coil, it’s a good idea to let the tank sit filled for a few minutes before doing any vaping. If your coil is too dry you can burn it, which not only changes the taste of your e-juice, but affects the safety of your device. You can also damage your device by storing it improperly. The bottom of a purse, inside a hot car, or in the pocket of your jeans are all bad places for your device. Get a lanyard or a case for easy reach and good protection.

Extend Your Battery

If you’ve heard that you should let your cell phone die completely before charging it back up, and always give it a full charge before unplugging it, these things are true. They’re also true for your vaporizers. Batteries last longer and hold a better charge when they’re allowed to completely drain and completely fill up again. If you get in the habit of partially charging your battery, you’ll reduce the life more quickly.

Once the battery is charged, unplug it. Most vaping devices take between two and five hours to charge, which means it’s not a good idea to let them charge overnight. You can overcharge a battery, which wears it out and eventually causes damage, so keep an eye on it while it’s charging. If you aren’t satisfied with your current battery life, you can always replace the original battery with a stronger one.

Treat your vaping device well to extend its life. Pay attention to the instructions that come with the devices you buy, and spend time getting to know your device. A little care goes a long way to a better vaping experience.
