Philadelphia, PA – June 9, 2016 – Maccabi USA and Michael Weinstein, Overall Chess Chairman for the 20th World Maccabiah Games USA Organizing Committee, are seeking qualified Jewish Chess players to represent the United States at the 20th World Maccabiah Games in Israel, July 4-18, 2017. The World Maccabiah Games are the world’s third largest international sporting event, with over 9,000 total participants representing 75 countries, including over 1,200 from the United States.
“The Maccabiah Games provides a venue for Jewish athletes to compete in their sport while experiencing a unique Jewish connection,” said Weinstein, who acted as the Overall Chess Chairman for the 13th European Maccabi Games
USA Organizing Committee in August, 2015. “The competition, against strong European and Israeli opponents, coupled with the inherent Jewish camaraderie of the Games, will provide a special brand of international Jewish brotherhood for Team USA’s Chess teams.
Maccabi USA is looking to appoint qualified Jewish Chess players to represent Team USA at the 20th World Maccabiah Games in the Juniors Boys’ & Girls’ age division, for those born from 1999-2002, as well as in the Open
Men’s and Women’s age division, for those ages 18-35. The deadline to apply is October 1, 2016, and applicants will be evaluated based on their United States Chess Federation rating along with their achievements in sanctioned tournaments.
