According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the word “iconic” in its contemporary environment should be used as follows:

“Designating a person or thing regarded as representative of a culture or movement; important or influential in a particular (cultural) context”

Sadly, however, the word is thrown around a little too liberally and this can remove some of the shine from those people and things that really warrant the term.

With this in mind, we decided we would try to separate some of the wheat from the chaff.
