This box set was released by GW a short while ago, and I snapped it right up. Containing four otherwise OOP warbands for Underworlds, it was Mollog and his cave-dwelling friends I was primarily after as I knew they would fit in quite nicely with my growing Troggoth force – but I had no wish to pay eBay pricing for them.
I was less worried about the others, but I have a Nighthaunt project floating about in my mind, I had always fancied doing a full Gloomspite army at some point, and I figure Skaven are going to be a thing in my future with the new Age of Sigmar edition coming… so I figured I could use the other warbands as test pieces for paint schemes.
Anyway, this was the result…
Everything here was Slapchopped, which meant, perhaps, an hour (maximum) spent on each warband. Makes everything a piece of cake…
Mollog’s skin is simply two coats of Dreadful Visage (as it is very thin), with Basilicanum Grey painted on top of that for the ‘knobbly’ bits. After that, it really was just a case of picking a colour for each bit of fungus or weird cave creature. The only vague complication was my thinning out the Volupus Pink with Contrast Medium for the crusty bit on the club.
Zarbag’s Gitz are the most numerous of the warbands, but they really did not take any longer as the models are very simple. The two Squigs are the work of minutes, while for most of the Grotz you simply paint in the details (skin, rope belts, and the like) and then do Black Templar contrast around them – does not even take that much precision, frankly, as the models do not have any complicated bits.
The leader models have a few more details, but nothing to stress you out, especially if you have already completed their underlings.
And finally the Skaven of Spiteclaw’s Swarm. As I said, I did these as a ‘test run’ for possible Skaven paint schemes, and discovered the Guilliman Flesh used on their skin is both effective and simple. I might lean towards Gore-Grunta Fur for their furry bits, but tried out Basilicanum Grey on this lot, and I think it works out well.
The observant among you will notice that I have not included the Thorns of the Briar Queen here. They are currently built but not painted, awaiting a weekend where I can try… something new… for a Nighthaunts project. Something for the future.
Anyway, I quite liked this box set, even though I do not play Underworlds, as it brings some older models back into our hands without paying silly eBay prices. The set sold out quickly, so maybe there will be another similar box on the way – I am kinda hoping for the Wurmspat to appear again, and I could probably find room for some of the older Orruk warbands too.
