(TRUNEWS) A school in La Loche, Canada has been placed on lockdown following reports of an active shooter.

At approximately 14:31 local time (16:31 EST) a nurse at the La Loche hospital confirmed to CBC Saskatchewan that patients were arriving suffering from gunshot wounds, but couldn’t comment on the number of victims.

Teddy Clark, the chief of Clearwater River Dene Nation, told The Star Phoenix that at least two people are dead.

CTV News quoted an official from the Northern Lights School Division talking about an shooter” in the school’s Dene building where classes are held for students between 7th and 12th grade.

The community’s fire chief was quoted as saying a boy with a gun was in custody.

Eric Terryberry, a pharmacy assistant at Northern pharmacy in La Loche, said he heard the school lockdown ended around 15:00 local time (17:00 EST), and students were being bussed to a local auditorium to be collected by parents.

Brad Wall, the Premier of Saskatchewan, has released a press statement to Facebook regarding the shooting.



In Canada, like the U.S., carrying a firearm into a school for self defense is strictly prohibited.

Canada’s gun control push began with handgun registration in 1934, automatic firearms registration in 1951 and restrictive firearms classifications  in 1969. By 1977, individuals who wished to acquire firearms legally were required to pass a criminal background check, and in 1995 all firearms were required to be registered.

How many more mass shootings must occur in schools for people to realize Gun-Free zones make students less safe.
