Every year, pet parents set aside the second Sunday in June to remember our pets that are no longer with us. Even if our kitty used to tear the stuffing out of our couch, we still miss her dearly. And in spite of our dog’s puppy breath, we’d love to have just one more day of doggie kisses if we could.
Remembering is honoring.
Taking time to reflect on the lives of our fallen friends honors their memories. It can be a bittersweet day for some of us; it’s especially difficult if you lost your pet quickly, due to a rapidly-advancing illness or an accident.
Thinking about the good times, though, helps keep the memory of your pet alive. There is a part of her that will live forever, with you. Truly, remembering a pet that’s passed away isn’t terribly different from remembering a human loved one that’s no longer with us.
Creating a memorial can help preserve your pet’s legacy.
Some pet parents choose to bury their pets and have markers to show where they’re now resting. Others may have a pet cremated, and honored in a special urn and displayed in the home. Still other pet parents do not choose to have a physical memorial of their lost pet, instead allowing the vet to care for their remains.
A memorial doesn’t have to be a physical thing. Writing a Facebook post about your best memories with your dog, or starting a web page with pictures and stories about your cat can be another way to share your pet’s legacy with others. There are most definitely other folks out there who have lost pets, and many who can both mourn and celebrate with you.
Consider helping needy pets, too.
World Pet Memorial Day is a good opportunity to spend some time volunteering for a shelter, or considering a donation to a rescue organization in your pet’s name.
Taking care of your living pets is another way to remember those that you’ve lost.
It is sad, but it’s true: sometimes we lose a pet because of an innocent mistake. We are human: finite and fragile beings. Maybe the package of baking chocolate was on the bottom shelf of the pantry and the door was left open. Maybe your dog had diabetes, but it was unrecognized and therefore untreated until it was too late.
Doing things like choosing the best raw dog food and reconsidering the various pet safety measures you have in place can help, in some small way, make up for those past mistakes. Even just knowing what’s in your dog’s food can be a first step.
