Session one of the nation’s biggest water polo tournament is under way. Thousands of young athletes from throughout the United States have made their way to San Jose and its surrounding communities to vie for the title of the best club team in their age groups in the USA.

Only a few will ascend to the top step of the medal podium, but that’s not the point. A showcase for the expanding reach of the sport throughout the country, the tournament serves as a reward for the hard work each team has done to qualify from one of the 13 regions designated by USA Water Polo.

The first session is almost exclusively boys; the girls will follow a week from now.

News outlets from across the country have filed reports on local teams that have secured spots in the contest, including this TV report from San Antonio, Texas.
