Yamaha India has officially taken the wraps off the FZ25 in New Delhi and doing so, they have now officially entered the quarter-litre naked motorcycle segment in the country. This is Japanese's answer to the TVS Apache RTR 200 4V, the KTM Duke 200 and the Pulsar 200 range of motorcycles and sits neatly in between its siblings, the YZF-R15 and the YZF R3.
Maintaining the streetfighter look, the design cues of this new breed is taken from the younger FZ16, predominantly the fuel tank and the exhaust unit. It, however, gets a fresh new twin split LED headlamp unit that features the Automatic Headlamp On (AHO) as per the government regulations. At the rear too the bike gets an all LED taillight cluster surrounded by neatly designed aluminium grab bar.
The bike is equipped with an all-digital instrument display that includes trip meters, speedometer, tachometer, fuel gauge, odometer and both live and average fuel economy. The new Yamaha FZ 25 is available in three different colour options: Knight Black, Warrior White and Ballistic Blue.
Similar to the Brazilian Fazer 250, powering this new hunk is a 249 cc air and oil-cooled, 2-valve, fuel injected, single cylinder engine that can produce 20.6bhp @ 8,000rpm, which is not jaw dropping awesome, but manages this disappointment with the torque delivery of 20Nm peak @ 6,200rpm. This power is taken to the rear via a 5-speed gearbox and chain linkage and the engine carries the Blue Core technology keeping the right amount of balance between performance and efficiency meeting BS IV efficiency norms.
Telescopic front with 130 mm of wheel travel and a rear mono shock unit with 120 mm of wheel travel and box-section swingarm handles the suspension setup while a 282mm front and 220 mm rear discs take care of the braking. The bike rides on 100/80 tubeless unit at the front and a 140/70 tubeless unit at the rear sported on 17” alloys.
Unfortunately, the motorcycle gives a miss with ABS, without it even being an optional package. A let down especially at a time where every other contender offers this safety feature. But Yamaha promises to equip the next editions of the FZ25 with ABS when it becomes a standard as per government regulations.
It is built on a diamond type frame similar to the R15s' and weighs at a low 148 kilos kerb. The split, step-up seat gives ample support to both rider and pillion. The exhaust unit is similar to the ones seen on the other FZ's and the uni-directional flow will ensure a crisp note. A 15mm shorter handlebar position compared to the FZ 2.0 dictates a slightly sportier riding position.
Carrying forward the FZ legacy, the FZ 25 sports aggressive styling cues and a torquey engine that will appeal to the age group of 20-30. It will be a slick ride for your daily needs around town and the 2500cc should do justice to response levels and refinement. The bike is priced at a mouth-watering ₹1.19 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi) officially making it the most affordable quarter-litre and the deliveries are to commence from February.
