Innovation Corner, by Lee Williams and Susan Headrick

This semester TIS introduced a new workshop for middle school students in the Maker Space. The workshop is called “Beginners Electronic Workbench.” About ten 7th and 8th grade students have been diligently working on Wednesdays after school to create and innovate. Students are learning how to design, build, and code devices and small table-top robots. The Electronics Workbench uses a special computer processor called Arduino which is specially designed for prototyping new electronics with sensors, motors, LEDs, and various other input/output parts.

Below are photos of students learning how to make wearable electronics. Here they are experimenting with light sensors, conductive thread, and LEDs. Innovation is happening in the Secondary Maker Space.

Online Courses – Summer, 2016

High school students desiring to take online courses during the summer of 2016 (and earn TIS high school credit) should speak with Mr. Scranton, the Guidance Counselor, before May 8th. These courses are not designed to “get ahead” in a subject, but are used for transfer students to “catch up” and to resolve scheduling impossibilities. Students who take online courses need to meet academic criteria, have permission from the principal, and pay for the classes on their own. Online classes demand a great deal of self-discipline and inner motivation, and should not be attempted without a strategic plan.
