You are invited to attend the Principals’ Coffee coming up on Wednesday on March 9. Please use our online suggestion form to submit your questions or comments to principals. Use this link and click on Suggestion Box.  There is also a Suggestion Box conveniently located outside the Admissions Office. Passports and Visas – please notify the admissions office of all updates

A very important note, in light of Spring Trips – Please be sure that your son/daughter’s passport and visa are up-to-date well in advance of the trip leaving dates. After completing any updates, please provide the updated documents to the Admissions office. In order to have accurate information on plane/train tickets, we would request that updated documents be submitted no later than Wednesday, April 13th.

ISC Fine Arts Festival Details and Bussing Schedule



Friday, March 11

Please join us for the 3rd Annual ISC Juried Art Show on this afternoon, as a part of the ISC Fine Arts Festival. Middle and High school students from all six ISC schools will be submitting art pieces, and they will be exhibited on the 1st Floor at TIS.  Parents are invited to TIS to view the selected art pieces. In addition, outstanding art students from each high school have been invited to come to TIS for the weekend’s events which include an art workshop all day Friday and a visit to the Tianjin Art Museum on Saturday.

Saturday, March 12

The top six Art Students’ Pieces from the ISC Juried Art Show will be exhibited on the ground floor of the Concert Hall’s lobby.

ISC Fine Arts Festival Concert will begin at 7:30p.m. at the Tianjin Grand Theatre Concert Hall. The Concert Hall is south of the Tianjin Grand Theatre complex, next to The Galaxy Mall.

Guests are to enter through Gate 1.

TIS-subsidized 20RMB tickets are still available from Trancy Li in the administration area. There are just over 100 tickets left. When these tickets sell out, others are available through the Theatre Box Office for 100 RMB /Ticket.

Special Reading Month in the Library

The Wonderful World of Roald Dahl



Look who came to visit our students at the elementary library: the BFG and Mrs. Silver’s turtle Alfie!

During March, the library is hosting a themed program focusing on Roald Dahl, the World’s no. 1 Storyteller and author of much-loved stories including Charlie & the Chocolate Factory, James & the Giant Peach, Matilda, the BFG, and many others. Please come join us during one of those magic moments:

Tuesdays @9 a.m. & 2 p.m.

Thursdays @12:20 p.m., 1:25 p.m., & 2:40 p.m.

Fridays @2 p.m.

Calendar Notice

There will be no classes for ECC children on March 11 for report writing.

Speech Meet

Preparation for the annual Elementary Speech Meet is under way. This is an event that all Elementary students take part in, as a way to develop their public speaking skills. Please continue to work with your child at home to help them memorize their speech. The classroom Speech Meets will occur this coming week, March 9th – 11th. The winners of the class Speech Meets, top 2 in each category, will have the opportunity to participate in the Speech Meet Celebration the morning of Wednesday March 16th.

Super Saturday Soccer

Sign up forms for Super Saturday Soccer went out this week. If your child is interested in participating please fill out and submit your form by Monday, March 7th. We will begin our season on Saturday, March 12th. More information will be sent out next week to students who sign up for this season.

Dress Like a Book Character Day

This month is March Madness in the elementary library. The students are enjoying read-alouds and visits from different Roald Dahl characters throughout the month. We will join in the celebration by dressing up like a book character on Friday, March 18th. We invite the students to dress up like their book character of choice on this day!

Spring Trip Information

Parents should receive an informational e-mail on Friday, March 11th, and students should bring home a form to sign and return by March 16th.  The form should be returned to Ms. Dai, MS Secretary.

No Homework Night

This coming Wednesday, March 9 is a no homework night in middle school.  We hope you will be able to enjoy the evening as a family.

Student-led Conferences

(SLCs) will be optional for some middle school students this quarter.  SLCs for Quarter 3 will take place on Monday, March 28.  If you would like for your child to participate in an SLC, please contact Ms. Dai and she will gladly arrange a time for you and your child.  She will contact you directly if a teacher is making a request for a conference.  All students will still make a portfolio in advisory, and students who don’t participate in an SLC on Monday, March 28, will bring home the portfolio and a form that asks if a parent has seen the portfolio.  Advisory teachers will collect the portfolios and signed forms after spring break.  For an introduction to what SLCs are all about, please see the document below.

TIS Science Fair

We had three excellent Science Fair submissions this year. Tom Park and Stella Park won the competition with a Robotic arm entry. Kevin Min and Jenny Hwang came in second, with KyuYong Yoon taking third place. All will advance to the Intel Science Fair based on the strength of their entries. Congratulations to all three groups for this accomplishment.

Service Day Update

High School students were given the opportunity to interact with residents from the Tianjin Social Welfare Institute, hosting a fun-filled carnival for approximately 35 adult residents. See next week’s Eagle’s Nest for pictures.

Spring Trips 2016

Planning for Spring Trips has begun!  This year’s trips are May 15/16 – May 20.   Parents should receive an informational e-mail on Wednesday, March 9th, and students should bring home a form to sign and return by March 21st to Ms. Zhang Rong, HS Secretary.

Advanced Placement Exams – Preregistration Survey

AP students should have already completed the online registration survey. If they have not, please remind your child to do so at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/APExam_Registration2016

We will be giving further due dates and specific information about AP Exam testing at the Principals’ Coffee and to students directly during assembly and AP Classes.

Reminder: If students are taking an AP test but not attending a class at TIS, they will need to pay for those tests.  Payments should be made to our finance office.

Special Guest Speaker from Montreat College

Paul J. Maurer, President of Montreat College, North Carolina, will be presenting the school and the history of higher education in America to us on March 31. The meeting will be from 1:00 to 3:00p.m. in TIS auditorium. This event is open to the public, parents, friends of TIS and anyone else who is interested are welcome to join.

Brief Bio of President Maurer

Paul J. Maurer brings a wealth of experience as the eighth president of Montreat College. As a visionary and results-driven Christian leader, he believes deeply in the value of Christ-centered higher education. Drawing from more than 25 years of leadership in nonprofit and higher education administration, Dr. Maurer has led efforts in governance, organizational development, marketing and communications, adult and graduate studies, and government relations.

Prior to Montreat College, Dr. Maurer served as senior vice president for external relations at Gordon College, and prior to Gordon, he served as president of Sterling College – both sister institutions to Montreat College within the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities. He has spent nearly two decades in higher education leadership.

He is a published author and frequent speaker.

Dr. Maurer earned his Ph.D. in political science from Claremont Graduate University, where he was an H. B. Earhart Fellow and a John M. Olin Fellow. He earned his B.A. from the University of Cincinnati and his M.Div. from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. Dr. Maurer is a scholar of the American presidency, with specific expertise in the moral and religious rhetoric of U.S. presidents.

He enjoys biking, golf, and almost anything outdoors. He has the special talent of cutting his own hair.

Dr. Maurer and his wife, Joellen, have been married for 26 years, and have four children: Jon, Liz, Daniel and Sarah.

Athletes are encouraged to bring their own lunch as there will be no food for sale at TIS.  TIS will provide fruit for all athletes.
