Feedback from an Admissions Director

Last week I had the chance to meet with the admission director for New York University. From our conversation, I understood that colleges and universities get thousands more applications than they will accept. This means they can pick the best students from those that applied. She talked about a few things that can help students when applying to universities and what universities look for. I would like to share what we discussed.

Question: What is the main thing you look for in a student essay?

Answer: “We look for the student to show off their accomplishments. This is the time when students can share things about themselves that are not included in their application portfolio. It gives us an opportunity to learn more about the student and really see what their passion is”

Question: What is your biggest frustration when reading student essays?

Answer: “My biggest frustration when reading an essay is having to read an essay that does not answer the prompt. We give the writing prompt for a reason. When a student fails to answer the prompt it is an indication to us that the student cannot follow directions or they are too consumed with trying to tell us what they think we want to hear.”

Question: What can our students do to stand out from other students?

Answer: “Get involved with something outside of school. We see too many students that do nothing but school and school related activities. If a student talks about being passionate about a subject we expect to see something in their personal life that demonstrates that.”

Question: What types of things?

Answer: “Part time jobs, internships, or volunteering. We see many applicants that have volunteer hours on their application but there is a disconnect between how they spend their time and what they say they are interested in. We don’t want student that are volunteering just so they can put it on their application. We would rather see a student spend extra time getting into a competition at school or find their own outside of school. For example if a student tells us they really want to be a teacher we expect to see tutoring experience on their application or at least an explanation that it was not allowed. Instead, all to often we see community service. What does community service mean? Does it mean they picked up rubbish or spent time in a community center helping disadvantaged children? One shows a passion for helping children the other does not.”

The main point she was trying to make is that universities want students that “fit” well in the university. They would rather admit a student with an SAT score of 2050 that is a good fit than a student with a score of 2400 that is not a good fit. They can only determine if a student is a good fit by reviewing all the supporting documents and reading the student’s essay.

Additionally she told me that most schools do not look at the writing portion of the SAT. Further, she said that many schools are adopting a procedure of requiring an additional essay as part of the application process done during an interview. Many schools require this because so many students are being coached for their essay and the writing portion of the SAT test that it is difficult to determine what their true writing level is.

The last thing she shared was “these are high school students so we expect to see mistakes and when we don’t it concerns us.” She went on to share a story about a student essay that seemed a little different then what she normally reads. When she typed some of the text into Goggle she found the essay available online. She informed the student that he was no longer eligible to be considered for admission and that it was her duty to inform the Common Application service that he plagiarized his essay.
