English Classes for Moms

Mom's English Language Class

TIS is offering English classes for moms who want to improve their English skills.  Meeting every Wednesday in the Elementary library annex room, beginners have two class options; from 9-9:50AM and 10-10:50AM.  Advanced English speakers will meet from 11-11:50AM.  These classes were successful last semester, so TIS decided to  continue this offering starting next week.  Moms can learn how to communicate with secretary by phone, how to invite your kid's friends over to play, how to write a note to a teacher and so on.  Come to learn and chat in English with other moms! Please contact the liaisons, if you would like join.

Mom's Korean Language Class

Is anyone interested in learning Korean?  We will continue a Mom’s Korean language class on Wednesday morning starting next week.  We will meet every Wednesday (except Principal’s Coffee days), with one class at the HUB 10:00am - 10:50AM, a second class at the Blue room 10:am-10:50AM, and a third class at the HUB from 11:00-11:50AM.  All classes are for beginners, with Korean Moms as our teachers. Please contact the liaisons, if you would like to join.

China Day February 6 - Please Mark Your Calendars

This year’s China Day falls on Friday, February 6, a week before our Chun Jie break.  We will highlight the Qin Dynasty (221 B.C. - 206 B.C.) and we encourage all to either come dressed in traditional Chinese clothes OR wear red that day as we celebrate China’s rich history.

China Day is divided up into three distinct parts; cultural activities (in the gym), three student-centred performances (both our own students and a few guest performers) and Chinese traditional cuisine.

Cultural Activities: Students will receive a 20RMB valued sheet of Vendor Tickets.   Additional tickets will be on sale and also for all non-TIS students.

Chinese Traditional Cuisine:  Lunch cost: There is a small amendment to last week ~ There will be a complimentary Chinese lunch to all students.   The cost for lunch for both parents and guests will be 20RMB.

China Day’s schedule:

ECC ~ Begins at 10am with Cultural Activities, followed by lunch at 11am (in the glass rooms), and ending with a performance at Noon.

Elementary ~ Begins at 11am with Cultural Activities, followed by lunch (in the glass rooms) at 12:40pm and ending with a performance at 1:45pm.

Tips for the Second Semester

We just finished the third week of the second semester and I want to talk about how quickly the rest of the year goes by. The second semester is very busy for students and families. Spring festival is the last two weeks of February and it will be March when we come back with just three weeks before the end of the third quarter. Here is a short list of things you can do to help your child this semester.

1.  Be involved

Check their progress on PowerSchool. If you need help accessing PowerSchool please let us know.

Talk to them about their life.

Know who their friends are.

2.  Help them stay caught up on homework

We can arrange for a tutor if your child needs one.

They can stay after school and join one of the homework clubs

3.  Make sure they get enough sleep

Elementary students need 10-12 hours sleep a day

Secondary students need 8-9 hours sleep a day

The average secondary student gets 5.5 hours sleep a day

4.  Make sure they take a break from studying

Give them an evening or weekend day off

Schedule a time everyday where they are not allowed to do homework.

5.  Help them have fun

Playing is fundamental for helping to develop good social skills

It gives the brain a rest and helps the brain develop the synaptic connections that build long term memories
