ANNUAL PARENT SURVEY

Dear TIS Parents, we value your feedback about our school.

For those of you with us last spring, you may remember that we initiated an annual school-wide survey of parents, students, and staff. Having your thoughtful input helps us in our continual efforts to improve the educational experience for your children. Our plan is to present this survey each November or early December.

The survey asks questions about the school’s learning environment (physical as well as social and emotional), the educational programs, your child’s teachers, school safety, school-home communication, and opportunities for parental involvement. We need your perspective as we evaluate these aspects of our school and we appreciate your comments. We welcome survey responses from both parents, or one parent can respond for the whole family.

The survey link was included in the Dec. 5th Eagle’s Nest email to parents. If you need the link sent to you, please email Trancy Li to request it: tli@tiseagles.com

Wednesday, Dec. 10th, will be the last day to take the survey.

Last Monday's Bus Delays

Our leased busses were unprepared for Monday’s cold weather, resulting in pickup delays that made bus riding students have to wait in the freezing cold up to 30 minutes. We apologize for that and we intend to create a communication system for similar occasions so that we can notify parents of abnormal delays.

Sincerely, Jim Belcher
TIS Head Principal

From the Admissions Office

Living in an international community we understand that some families may be ending their contracts and returning to their home countries at the end of this quarter.  To help make the transition as smooth as possible, we ask that you give us at least 2 weeks notice so that we can prepare documents needed for the next school.

We also want to help prepare each student to exit well from their class and the school.  Having advance notice provides teachers time and understanding as they help students say goodbye.   Good closure is important and helps with adjustment to the new location.

Please contact our Admissions Office for the necessary forms and information to ensure there are no delays in preparation and release of student records.  Please note, we require 10 school days to prepare documentation.  Contact Admissions for more information.

Counselors Corner, by Jeffery Scranton

US Nationally Certified Counselor; M.Ed. Clinical Mental Health, Clemson University; BA Southern Wesleyan University
This week I want to share with you something from Annie Suen. She is the Elementary counselor at TIS. She has a background in counseling and brings unique skills to the counseling department. This will be a two part series.

Part 1

Teach your kids to control anger.

Anger is natural human emotion.  It is a normal, usually healthy emotion.  But when it gets out of control and turns destructive, it can lead to problems. So, how do we help our kids express their anger in ways that are appropriate and healthy?  Here are some suggestions.

Talk to the Child about his feelings-how often do you really talk to your child?  Are you able to communicate effectively with your child?  Does your child trust you?  The main reason of the child’s frustration is that they don’t find someone who they can share their personal feelings and emotions.  If you are able, and when your child is calm, talk to your child about what is happening in his life.  It would also help you to guide him about how to act in frustrating situations.

Speaking to your Child-tell your child that anger is healthy but that how we show anger is important.  When your child is angry, acknowledge his anger with your words.  Say things like, “I can see you are very angry. I will listen if you want to talk about it.”  Use reflective listening.  Repeat back to your child what he said in a soothing tone, so he knows you are listening.  Then turn the focus of the conversation toward the actions that your child took because he was angry and point out that when he its, bites, pinches, or inflict injury on the object of his anger that he is not behaving in an appropriate manner.

Redirecting the Anger-giving your child a channel to redirect his anger in positive ways can help solve his anger issues.  Set a time to get together with your child and discuss all his feelings.  Encourage him to keep a journal of his thoughts and emotions.  Make sure he maintains a healthy diet and gets proper rest.  Restrict him from playing violent video games and watching violent TV shows and movies.

Develop a feeling vocabulary-younger children display anger because they simply don’t know how to express their frustrations any other way.  Kicking, screaming, swearing, and hitting or throwing things may be the only way they know how to show their feelings.  To help him express his anger, create a feeling word poster.  Think of all the words that the child could use when he’s angry, then list the ideas. Ex. angry, mad, frustrated, irritated, furious.  Write them on a chart, hang it up, and practice using them when your child is angry: “you seem really irritated” “Looks like you are really angry.”  Use the words so he can apply them to real life.

Therefore, there will be no Elementary After School Activities. All Elementary students will need to ride the 3:30 bus home. We apologize for any inconvenience this causes, but appreciate your flexibility.

Winter Weather

There is definitely a winter chill in the air! During these colder months we will be following the policy below to determine whether or not students can take part in outdoor activities. It is important for your child to have a coat, hat and gloves at school each day for when they are able to go outside and play!

Cold Weather Policy

If the real feel or wind chill is below 10 degrees Fahrenheit/-12 degrees Celsius, the children will not go outside to play.  The principal or secretary will check http://www.accuweather.com/en-us/cn/tianjin/tianjin/quick-look.aspx?cityid=106780 for the current temperature.

Dress Code Reminder

Just a few dress code reminders, from the handbook, as we enter the winter months and begin dressing for the colder weather.

Shorts and pants must be loose fitting and modest. Shorts and skirts/dresses should be no shorter than 10 centimeters/4 inches above the knee when sitting or standing.

When wearing stockings, leotards, or other leggings, women should still follow the above rules regarding the length of skirts, dresses, and shorts

After School Clubs

Thursday, December 18 will be the last day of first semester after school clubs. Upon the return from Christmas break information will be sent home about after school clubs for the second semester.

Middle School Announcements

MS Christmas Concert

Come join us on Friday, December 12 at 7:00pm in the TIS Auditorium as the middle school bands and choirs perform Christmas music in various styles. We hope to see you there!

Christmas Concert

Help us look "sharp" for our Christmas Concert: All middle school students in band and/or choir need to wear "concert dress" for the December 12th Concert. For boys this includes an oxford-collared white shirt, black tie, black belt, black dress pants, black dress shoes, and black socks. For girls this includes a white dressy blouse, black loose-fitting dress pants, black socks, and black dress shoes. Girls may choose to wear a black skirt if it falls well below the knees while sitting. All clothes should be neat, clean, and solid-colored with no sparkles, stripes, or logos.

High School Announcements

Monday Afternoon Bus

On Monday, 12/8, due to the staff Christmas banquet, there will not be a 5:10 bus run within the city of Tianjin.  High school sports practices will end early, and there will be 3 busses at 4:45 pm for high school students.  The 5:10 pm TEDA bus will run as normal.

Christmas Banquet

The TIS high school student council is planning the annual Christmas banquet for TIS high school students and staff.  This year’s banquet will be held on Friday evening, December 19th at the Crown Plaza Hotel.  The theme for this year’s banquet is “One Starry Night.”  Students are encouraged, but not required to attend.  Tickets (subsidized by the Student Council) will be on sale very soon for 120 RMB per person.

Banquet Dress Code

When planning for the banquet, please note the following excerpt from the secondary handbook:

Students will be expected to dress formally for these occasions. For men this includes a suit or dress slacks, dress shirt, and dress shoes. For ladies this includes dresses, skirts and blouses or a formal pants ensemble. Dresses must have two straps. Spaghetti strap dresses are allowed, but no cleavage should be seen. There should be no plunging necklines front or back. The dress must cover the middle of the back. Appropriate undergarments must be worn but should not be seen. Short dresses or slits should be no more than 10 centimeters above the knee.

First Semester Final Exams

High School final exams are scheduled for Wednesday - Friday, December 17-19.  An exam schedule will be provided to students by Monday, December 8th.  Students are encouraged to get a good night’s rest and a good breakfast in preparation for exams.  It is also recommended that students review for a short time each day rather than spending large amounts of time on the night before a test.  Most students will be finished with their exams by 12:20 pm, and will be expected to take the 12:35 busses home.

Early Graduation

Juniors who are considering a Korean university may want to consider early graduation. Students must apply for early graduation by December 15 of their Junior year. The application process involves a meeting with guidance counselor Mr. Scranton for the student and at least one parent. Please see Mr. Scranton for more information.

2015 TIS High School Science Fair

The annual TIS High School Science Fair will be held on Tuesday March 3rd, 2015. A science fair project is an excellent way for students to understand and practice scientific inquiry by developing, implementing, and presenting an independent research project. The students are assessed on creative ability, scientific thought, thoroughness, skill, and clarity. Students can compete as individuals or in teams. Prizes will be awarded for each grade level, so everyone from freshman to seniors are encouraged to participate! Overall winners of the TIS Science Fair will travel to Chengdu to compete in the Sichuan Science Fair, which is the only regional qualifying fair for the highly prestigious Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) held in the United States. Placing at the school, regional, or International levels of a science fair is a great item for students to outline on their college applications.  Science is subject that can be studied… but real science is something you DO. Please see the information posted on the 3rd floor science wing or Mr Webber for more details.
