Mid-Quarter Reports

Mid-quarter Reports were made available on PowerSchool on Wednesday, September 17.   If you experience difficulty logging into the site, please contact Mrs. Xu ( ext. 324) or Miss. Cao (ext. 311) for help.  The web address to use for logging in is:  https://powerschool.tiseagles.com

Power Outages

There have been a couple of occasions in the past weeks of power going out at school. The outages have been short and minimally disruptive. The government is upgrading some of the utilities in the area. As a result there have been a couple times when they have caused minor damage to the power lines coming to the school. The damage is done off school campus away from where students would be.

We are communicating with the State Grid about the outages and trying to make sure any planned outages happen when students are not at school. Sometimes we cannot avoid power disruptions when students are at school so we try to schedule them for after 3:30pm.

New English Corner at TIS

The words fill my mind with friendly chatter, lots of pictures, people of all ages eagerly practicing the words they know.  Multi-national faces intently listen for new vocabulary to fill their everyday talk!  TIS has new English classes for Moms who want to improve their English skills.  Meeting every Wednesday in the Elementary library annex room, beginners will practice from9:00-9:50, 10-10:50, advanced speakers will join from 10:50-11:50.  The last Wednesday of the month will be a free English Corner where others can join and chat. The time and place will be announced once we know how many parents are interested.  Mollie Campbell, Rose Brent and Kristin Keith will be moderating these classes.  Come join in the chatter!

Coping Mechanisms

A quick review of the past two articles. The first was about personal hygiene and how it can be an early warning sign when someone is having a difficult time coping with an issue or problem. The second article was about self-talk and how it can affect our perspective. 11 common irrational beliefs were listed with the hope that if you recognized negative self-talk you would take the step necessary to change the dialogue.

I firmly believe the best treatment is preventative. The first two articles are preventative in nature and help a person recognize potentially negative thoughts and behaviors before they get too bad.  It is much easier to deal with an issue or problem early before we develop some strong negative coping skills that cause us discomfort and dysfunction.

Everyone uses coping skills to deal with life’s little ups and downs. Most of the time they are helpful tools to keep us moving forward towards our goals. Sometimes they cause us problems and we get stuck and make little or no progress towards our goals. In the worst cases we will regress some and completely give up trying to achieve our goals.

The next couple of weeks I want to discuss different coping mechanisms we use and how they can help us or cause us to get stuck. As humans we experience many different emotions from elation and joy to shame and guilt. As a result, we are subject to feelings of tension and stress. These feeling can cause cognitive dissonance when we start doing something outside our values.

In order to achieve the goals we set in life we engage in different thoughts and behaviors as we work towards those goals. The thoughts and behaviors are guided by our values. Values can be thought of as morals, principles, or ethics. They guide us and help us in all areas of life. When our thoughts or behaviors are not aligned with our values it causes us tension and stress.

Next week I will introduce common coping mechanisms we use when tension and stress become uncomfortable. I will share a short list of positive coping mechanisms that are healthy and a list that can be unhealthy. Recognizing unhealthy thoughts and behaviors is a good step in preventing bigger problems.

This includes the time before and after school when students are still in the school building. Exceptions include language classes and communication with others who cannot speak English.
