Event Description:

Whether you need public speaking practice for an upcoming presentation or tech talk, want to improve your skills as a teacher or want to become a more confident public speaker in general - this workshop is for you. Our goal is to help participants become more confident and effective communicators by providing practical exercises, speaking opportunities, instructions, and individual feedback. This will be our first time running this workshop so we wanted to make it exclusively available (and free!) for our dedicated TAs and Teachers.

Expectations to participants:

1. Communication workshop is a teamwork and participation of everybody who has signed up is very important. If you register for a session, please make sure to show up. The learning experience of everybody in the group depends on this. If you can't come, let us know as soon as possible so we can transfer your spot to somebody on a waiting list.

2. Be respectful and supportive of others in the group. Remember, we all, including you, will be stepping out of our comfort zone sooner or later - it's the whole point of the workshop. We are here to help one another make this all important step.

How it works:

This session will last for 2 hours. The skill we will focus on for this session is Eye Contact and our topic will be "Tell us about one of the best moments of your life". Half of the participants will be assigned the role of speakers and deliver a prepared speech, about 4 min long, following the instructions for the session; the other half of the participants will be assigned the role of speech evaluators and deliver an oral evaluation, about 2-3 min long, at the end of the session. Speaking is not the only component of effective communication. Listening is another crucial part of every successful communication, so prepare not only to speak, but also to listen and provide either oral or written feedback depending on your role at every session.

Please pick your preference as either a Speaker or Evaluator when you register. We will take this into account as your preference but we may need to update to have an equal number of both during the workshop.

About the Instructor:

Elena Bakhtina has been in the IT industry all her career, starting in coding and moving into business management roles after receiving her MBA. Her mission in life is to help build a new social image of women in society, and being a powerful and effective communicator is an inherent part of this image. Elena has created her Communication and Public Speaking workshop based on the best practices she came up with herself or learned from several communication training workshops she participated in as well as from her experience as a Toastmaster and a business communication practitioner.

To provide a quality speaking time for every participant, this session is limited to 15 people.

We would love your feedback following this event to see if there is value in having this workshop for all our GDI members. :)
