Pack their lead and a few treats! Here are things to do in Filey with a dog.
Have you ever considered visiting Filey with your dog? Whitby is commonly known as super dog-friendly. But Filey can also be a great destination for you and your best mate! Here, we share the best things to do in Filey with your dog. We will also recommend dog-friendly restaurants, pubs and accommodation so that you can make the most of your visit.
Is Filey Beach dog friendly?
Filey Beach is a 5-mile stretch of sand that extends from Filey Brigg to Bempton Cliffs, where you can find an RSPB reserve. A quarter-mile-wide strip of sand is visible at low tide, revealing numerous rock pools you can explore.
On Filey Beach, there is a small section where dogs are not allowed (between the Royal Parade and Cobble Landing) during the summer months (1 May—30 September). This isn’t much of a hindrance. There are still miles and miles of space where your dog can play to its heart’s content.
You can stroll along the promenade or head to Cayton Bay, a few miles north, to explore further.
Is there parking at Filey Beach?
Several spots will be available if you’re looking for on-street parking in Filey. However, some may have time restrictions or be reserved for permit holders only. Always check the signs before parking to avoid any issues.
Filey also has several pay-and-display car parks, including the Country Park, Station Avenue, Coble Landing, and West Avenue car parks. The rates and restrictions for these car parks can vary, so it’s best to check before leaving your car.
Walk to Filey Brigg
To the north of Filey town centre lies a peninsula known as Filey Brigg. The cliffs of this area rise to a height of 20 metres and are composed of diverse materials ranging from sandstone to limestone. This geological diversity makes it a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest.
You’ll stumble upon a stone sculpture when you venture through the Brigg. This sculpture denotes the conclusion of two National Trails: the Cleveland Way from Helmsley to Filey and the Yorkshire Wolds Way from Hessle (near Hull) to Filey.
The rocky terrain and intertidal zone of Filey Brigg are magnets for a diverse range of bird species. They’re crucial for wintering waders like Purple Sandpiper and breeding seabirds like Atlantic Puffin. In addition, you can spot many passerine birds migrating through during Spring and Autumn. Walk the Cleveland Way with your dog from Filey
The Cleveland Way is one of England’s Original National Trails, boasting 109 miles of breathtaking scenery. The trail starts at Filey Brigg and passes through Scarborough, Robin Hood’s Bay, and Whitby. It then heads inland through the Yorkshire Dales, finally ending at Helmsley.
The entire route would take nine days or more to complete, but you can opt for the section from Filey to Scarborough and back, which takes around three hours. There’s so much to explore on this trail, and it’s a great option to enjoy with your furry friend. Learn more about the Cleveland Way.
Visit Cayton Bay
Cayton Bay, located just up from Filey, is a hidden gem for surfers, complete with its surf school and hire shop on the beach. The best part? There are no seasonal dog restrictions at Cayton Bay, so you and your furry companions can enjoy the beach to the fullest.
The beach is home to many rock pools, and some sections are perfect for fossil hunting. Recently, the beach has been awarded the Quality Coast Award for its cleanliness, making it an ideal spot for families and their pets to enjoy.
