Obviously, Nigeria is faced with lots of problems and illegal refining in the Niger Delta region is definitely one of the biggest as far as the country’s economy is concerned.

This has been a lingering issue as Nigeria’s past leaders had tried in so many ways to end such an act by some selfish Nigerians but to no avail.

Over time, Nigeria has lost quite a sum due to the illegal refining activities in that region of the country.

Being one of the present administration’s campaign promises to restore peace and stability in the area, President Muhammadu Buhari’s vice, Yemi Osinbajo who is currently acting as the country’s president as Buhari enjoys medical vacation, has just revealed the plans of the government to establish modular refineries to engage youths involved in illegal oil refining in the Niger Delta.

There is no doubt that the youths in that part of the country have been vandalizing oil pipelines as well as setting up illegal refineries due to the unresolved issue they have with the federal government over time.

Niger Delta is the biggest oil producing state in the country which generates more revenue to the country more than every other state.

Again, due to industrial activities in terms of mining and refining oil, that part of the country has been experiencing some form of air and environmental pollution. Thus, the youths (Militants) have been engaging in one form of criminal and illegal activities or the other trying to remind the government of the need to create more job opportunities to youths across the region giving how they have been helping the country grow economically.

Remember in 2009, under the late President Umaru Yar’Adua’s administration, the militants who had been terrorizing the country were granted amnesty by the government for militants in order to reduce unrest in the oil-rich region.

And no, this strategy, just like many others in the past, failed.

Now, Osinbajo has just revealed that modular refineries will be created by the federal government to engage youths involved in illegal oil refining in the Niger Delta.

We are not just hoping that this step yields fruits but we also urge the militants and the Niger Delta’s youths to embrace this in good faith and help restore stability in the region.
