Following the lingering issue of Boko Haram and herdsmen attacks in the country, the Nigeria Army has revealed plans to recruit 12,000 youths from across the country in order to ensure proper security in the country. But is it a question of more personnel or a matter of coming up with a better strategy.

Yes, Nigeria is faced with a lot of problems at the moment but insecurity is certainly the worst feeling ever and one cannot help but understand why the mixed feelings.

At this point, Nigerians are obviously tired of plans on papers, they need to be sure that their lives matter and that the government is sleepless in an attempt to ensure peace in the country.

On January 17th, 2017, the Nigerian Air Force, in what they described as “accidental airstrikes”, killed over 100 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in a camp in Borno State. This again, has given Nigerians more reasons to panic as they no longer feel safe.

While lots of Nigerians think that the Nigerian Air Force is incompetent due to the “accidental airstrikes”, President Muhammadu Buhari in a statement which he tagged “regrettable operational mistake,” assured Nigerians that such an accident will never happen in his time. But is it a case of ‘one mistake too many?’

Yesterday, February 15th, Chief of Army Staff, COAS, Lt. Gen. Tukur Yusuf Buratai revealed to Nigerians that the Nigeria Army wil recruit 12,000 men in 2017 to help fight insurgence and other insecurity issues in the country.

Buratai, who made this known at budget defense session with the House of Representatives Committee on Army in Abuja, also said the recruitment exercise would take place after the approval of the Army’s 2017 budget proposal of N152.8 billion by President Buhari.

This is a cause of concern as far as Nigeria’s economy and her citizens are concerned.

With a N152.8 billion proposed by the Nigeria Army for 2017 alone, how far can they really go in bring down the issue of insecurity in the country? Is it another way of wasting the country’s funds?

Does The Nigeria Army really need more recruits or they need to come up with a better strategy on how to handle insecurity in the country?

Giving the ongoing recession in the country, N152.8 billion will go a long way to helping Nigerians generally if well invested. Thus, both the senate and Nigeria Army must be sure before putting in such a sum into that project.
