New Eatery Coming to the Bayview in 2018: Café Envy
Calling all Bayview-Hunters Point foodies! The proprietor of one of our favorite local spots, April Spears of Auntie April’s, is planning to launch a new venture early next year. The new eatery, Café Envy, will feature healthier options such as grilled shrimp salad, spinach salad with pomegranate and feta cheese, and organic mixed fruit.Café Envy will be located at 1705 Yosemite Ave in the Bayview District, the spot of the former Monte Carlo nightclub and Creole restaurant. With the new restaurant, Spears aims to create a model for young African-American entrepreneurs in the neighborhood. Her partner in the new venture is a fellow female Bayview native and Hoodline Reporter, Meaghan Mitchell.
“The number of African-American owned restaurants in the city of San Francisco are few and far in between.” Spears told Hoodline. “I can count those owned by black women on one hand. It’s my passion to preserve the legacy of black businesses in this city and in my neighborhood especially.”
The concept of Café Envy stems from Spears and Mitchell’s shared passion for inspiring women of color and increasing the availability of healthy food options. They plan to feature a lot of organic food on the menu, and want to partner with local breweries and distilleries in the neighborhood as they develop the restaurant’s drink menu.
The new restaurant will have a “living room” feel, complete with couches, board games, café-style tables, full bar seating and Wi-Fi.
The goal is to launch Café Envy in the Spring of 2018, however, the building is in dire need of repairs. To help fund these costs, Spears and Mitchell have started a Kickstarter campaign. Every dollar raised will support the restaurant build out, development of a new ADA accessible bathroom, new patio and equipment.
We can’t wait to taste the new treats Café Envy has in store!
