This month’s sewing LOOK BOOK is all about activewear! With the New Year brings new challenges and we know that a lot of people are fearful of sewing with stretch. We have got some great posts coming up about sewing jersey and spandex but first we wanted to inspire you with the best activewear sewing patterns out there.

As part of this months look book we are running a competition on social media. The first name picked out of the hat will win £50 to spend at Dragonfly Fabrics and the second will win the Sewaholic Dunbar top featured in this post, also from Dragonfly Fabrics. Please head over to Facebook, Twitter or Instagram to find out more. They are also offering 15% off to anyone who joins their newsletter so sign up and grab yourself a bargain!

Yoga Set – Schnittchen

This new pattern from Schnittchen includes the whole yoga outfit – leggings, tank top and skirt, all in a relaxed style. If you don’t make it to your yoga class we think these would be just as comfy to wear to do your sewing! Indulge in lovely soft knit fabrics for this set to lounge about in or get fit.

Sundance Jacket – Greenstyle Creations

The Sundance Jacket was an immediate hit when it was released last year by GreenStyle Creations. The two versions make this pattern really versatile because you can wear the more fitted jacket with pleated back for cycling or horse riding and the zipped hoodie version with details including thumb cuffs to keep you warm when jogging in the park. Other design details include in seam zipper pockets and collar, so lots of ways to make it your own. Medium to heavier weight knits are suitable for this jacket including double knits and Ponte de Roma.

Manta Wave Leggings – Named Clothing

These leggings have so much style you don’t even need to be exercising to wear them! With a wavy cut design detail at the knee, elasticated waist and no side seams these are a easy make and ideal if you have sewing experience but are new to working with knits. Combine your favourite two medium weight jersey fabrics for the ultimate sportswear look.

Activewear 4261 – McCalls

If you are looking to create a mix and match set of activewear items then this is the pattern for you. Make full length or above ankle loose fitting trousers, full length sleeve top, zipped hoodie with pockets, fitted cropped top and bag for your sports mat. This set will have you kitted out for all sorts of activewear classes. Make using medium weight knits for the clothes and a woven heavy weight cotton or waterproof fabric for the bag.

Polly Top & Sweatpant Set – Schnittchen

If you are more into your dance classes than yoga why not try this top and sweatpants set from Schnittchen. Easy to sew but all about the detail, the top has a fake v-neck and sleeve seams at the front with two top and sleeve length versions. The semi-fitted sweatpants have side pockets and an elasticated waist with yoke and godet side seam details. There is also optional pant cuffs. Make using light to medium weight knits.

Duathon Shorts – Fehr Trade

Now we get serious with these running shorts from Melissa Fehr. Fitted for high performance these shorts come in three length options with contrasting side panel to add design detail. These shorts are practical too with an integrated side pocket at both hips for your keys. If you cycle instead the pattern comes with an optional padded piece for comfort. Suitable for stretch jersey fabrics like Lycra and you’ll need intermediate sewing skills.

Dunbar Top – Sewaholic

Don’t forget you can win the Dunbar top as part of our competition, head over to Facebook, Instagram or Twitter to find out more! The Dunbar top is part of a collection of activewear sewing patterns from Sewaholic released last year. The pattern comes with both sports bra or tank top options to make a professional and practical sports top. The sports bra version is fully lined with the option of adding padding or supportive bra cups. Both versions have a racerback design and contrasting panels. The edges are finished with binding so you will be able to perfect your skills. This pattern is suitable for stretch jersey fabrics like Lycra and you’ll need intermediate sewing skills.

Multi-sport Skort – Jalie

Have you ever heard of a ‘shork’ before? Neither had we! But this pattern combines practical shorts with a skirt over the top, ideal if you want to be active but not reveal quite as much. This is one of Jalie’s most popular patterns in their sportswear range as it’s great for all sports such as running, cycling and the gym. There are also plenty of design options to choose from – regular or low narrow waist, attached briefs or compression shorts, all with a pocket in the side panel. Plus if you want to brave it you can also make just the shorts without the skirt.

Knot Your Average Top & Dress – 5 out of 4 Patterns

This pattern has both top and dress options and is ideal if you are a nursing mum because it can be made with maternity modificaitons for feeding. Perfect if you are getting back into exercise with a family. It comes with different sleeve lengths and a tutorial on how to ruche the sleeves too. 5 out of 4 patterns design their patterns to be adaptable for you and your family, so if you are no longer nursing you can also make this top or dress without the feeding modifications.

Back Pack & Tote 6121 – McCalls

Last but not least we have included a back pack and tote pattern so that you have something to put all your newly sewn sportswear in! Make the backpack to go for a bike ride or the tote to take to the gym. The back pack has front and side pockets with the option to make the straps and loops in a contrasting colour. The tote bag is lined with inside and outside pockets so you could make the lining from a waterproof fabric to protect your bag. We would suggest heavyweight cottons or other durable fabrics for both of these bags.
