A question we get asked a lot by our community is what should I study to help me start my entrepreneurial journey?

A lot of people come to us wanting to study to be an entrepreneur and make no mistake there are thousands of entrepreneur courses out there to choose from. The problem is that they can vary in value and quality quite significantly.

We know that usually at the start of studying, people can be restricted financially. Maybe you’re a student who can’t get Vet Fee help for a Diploma course, or maybe you’re working a day job while trying to start something on the side and don’t have access to investors.

Everyone is in a different situation, but you have to start somewhere. Many people also have an idea, but they need more skills and knowledge to help bring that idea to life, making seeking education the best next step to take.

What the Best Entrepreneur Courses have in common

If you want to study entrepreneurship there’s quite a few schools and courses to choose from, but it’s important to know the basics of what to look out for when choosing the right place for you.

Fostering entrepreneurial skills and qualities

Sometimes above all else, the course should try to foster the development of certain qualities in an individual which are essential to becoming a successful entrepreneur, qualities such as Imagination, risk-taking/courage, determination, a strong work ethic, and accountability.

These are just a few of the qualities that need to be nurtured if you’re going to have any chance of success. Sometimes, the actual tactical skills you will learn are less important than the ‘mindset’ you need to achieve greatness.

A history of successful graduates

Nothing says success like a list of graduates each year who have gone on to start their own successful businesses. You can find out what some of our past graduates have gone on to achieve here.

Multidisciplinary Study

A well rounded program that covers the disciplines at the core of any business is essential. Accounting, finance, marketing, sales, business law basics and strategy are key. Look for a course which at least touches on a few of these areas.

Degrees vs Diplomas vs Masters vs MBA vs free online courses vs short courses

There are many options for the qualification and style of learning that you can undertake but it really depends on what previous education you have already completed (undergraduate or postgraduate) and whether you require an official accreditation or not.

At the end of the day, the quality of the course is more important than the letters that will be beside your name. With that said, if you don’t have a qualification and you can kill two birds with one stone, why not get an official accreditation at the same time? Short courses and low-cost courses online can be a little thin on the content in comparison to more intensive courses, just remember that you tend to get what you pay for.

How we fit into Australia’s Entrepreneur scene

As part of Australia’s largest community for entrepreneurs, we see thousands of budding startups each year. Some find success and some don’t, but it’s import to understand the reason why some were successful and others weren’t. Based on our experience, the difference between success and failure when it comes to starting your own business is generally dependent on a few critical factors.

1. Developing a solid business model

Everyone has an idea which is great, but sometimes people aren’t willing to work for it or there’s already an existing substitute in the market. You need to develop a clear perceptual difference in the marketplace and offer something of value.

2. Selling

Even if you have a mediocre product, sales is critical for startups that it is often the sole factor for the demise or success of an enterprise. If you can’t sell, then you need to find someone for your team who can.

3. Growth

Getting the first sale is important, but getting enough customers to cover costs on a continuing basis is critical. Controlling your costs as you scale and ensuring you are creating either profits or shareholder value is paramount.
