May is National Hamburger Month. Let’s take a look at some fun facts about America’s favorite sandwich:
While no one knows for sure, some say that Otto Kuase, of Hamburg, Germany, was the inventor of the hamburger sandwich. In 1891, his creation featured a beef patty, topped with a fried egg. The fried egg was later omitted by German sailors.
Hamburgers used to be served on flat bread. The first hamburger bun was invented in 1916 by a fry cook, named Walter Anderson. Five years later, he co-founded White Castle.
White Castle is widely known as the first fast-food hamburger franchise. Their first location opened on September 13, 1921, in Wichita, Kansas. The price of their burgers was only 5 cents!
Hamburgers were referred to as “Liberty Sandwiches” during WWII. This was done to avoid German nomenclature.
In 1924, the cheeseburger was invented by a 16-year-old, named Lionel Sternberger. While working at his father’s Rite Spot sandwich shop, in Pasadena, he added a slice of American cheese. His father liked it and the rest is history!
The first McDonald’s restaurant opened in San Bernardino, on May 15th, 1940.
Donald Gorske, of Wisconsin, holds the world record for eating over 32,672 Big Macs in his lifetime!
De Daltons, a Dutch restaurant, sells the world’s most expensive burger. Their “Golden Boy” is made with Wagyu beef, short ribs, king crab, beluga caviar, vintage Iberico Jamon, Dom Perignon battered onion rings, smoked duck egg mayo, and Dom Perignon-infused gold-leaf buns. They sell for $5,964. Anyone want to fly to Holland with me for dinner tonight?
