How to enable the Microsoft Edge bookmarks bar

Watch the Video: How to enable the Microsoft Edge bookmarks bar

Microsoft Edge is the new default web browser included with Windows 10. Known as Project Spartan during its development phase, Edge replaced Internet Explorer when Windows 10 launched. The name, Microsoft Edge, became official during Microsoft’s Build 2015 conference. Build 2015 took place at The Moscone Center in San Francisco.

With the free Windows 10 upgrade offer behind us, as well as the epic Anniversary Update, perhaps the time has come to give the latest Edge version a try. It’s a good time to do so since Microsoft will soon begin offering incentives just for using Edge. Microsoft is rebranding the Bing Rewards program as Microsoft Rewards, and rewarding users for Bing searches and active Edge use.

When you first launch Edge, you may notice that Spartan was an appropriate, intentional project name. The browser’s user interface is devoid of many accouterments found in other browsers. The simplistic view is pleasing and distraction-free but lacks familiarity too. For example, the book icon in the web address field is not for bookmarks, but for Reading View. The star icon is not for bookmarks, but for Favorites. In fact, Favorites in Edge is synonymous with bookmarks in other browsers. Further, to view and manage Favorites, you need to click on the obscure, 3-lined toolbar icon called Hub. Also missing is the bookmarks bar, the readily accessible panel containing single-click bookmarks for the websites you visit most often. But the bookmark bar is just turned off by default. You can enable the Microsoft bookmarks bar, know as the Favorites Bar, in a few easy steps.

Enable the Favorites Bar from under the More menu

In Edge’s toolbar, click the More button, which is the one with 3 dots, then choose Settings.

In Settings, click the View favorites settings button in the Favorites section.

In the Favorites bar section, click the Show the favorites bar toggle from Off to On.

With Show the favorites bar turn on, the option to Show only icons on the favorites bar displays. When turned on, only the favicon of your favorites will display in the favorites bar. Otherwise, each bookmark/favorite will display with the favicon accompanied by the page’s title (or text of your choice) as a label.

As the video depicts, if you don’t want or like the favorites bar, after all, toggle the Show the favorites bar button from On to Off. The favorites bar disappears from view immediately.
