Welcome to the June edition of Teachers’ Money Matters.
In this month’s newsletter we’re pleased to announce the launch of our new retirement hub. To help you plan for your future, we thought it would be helpful to have everything relating to pensions and retirement in one place. And to encourage teachers to start thinking about their saving habits we’ve also got some information on our ‘Think Thrifty Week’, as well as some home insurance tips to help you choose the right cover.

Everything you need to know about retirement in one place
We know that pensions can be confusing and that retirement is a daunting prospect, so to make things easier we’ve launched our new, online retirement resources hub.
The hub is the go-to area for teachers considering their pension options and contains lots of useful information to help you plan for retirement.
Within the retirement hub, you’ll find:
The latest industry news surrounding pensions and retirement
FAQ pages designed to demystify common queries
Retirement planning guides for teachers at various life stages
Retirement newsletters, specifically written for teachers and their families
Information about the savings and investment products Teachers Assurance offers
This hub is the first of many topical areas, so keep an eye out for future hubs relating to things like New Individual Savings Accounts (NISAs) and monthly savings.
Our ‘Think Thrifty Week’ encourages teachers to start saving
From 1st to 7th June 2015, we’ll be encouraging teachers to think about their future finances and start saving money.
Our ‘Think Thrifty Week’ will promote a ‘make do and mend’ attitude and we’ll be sharing lots of thrifty tips; from how to cut energy bills to ideas for free days out.
We’ll also be asking Twitter users to share their #ThinkThrifty tips as part of a competition to win a £75 Amazon voucher (T&Cs apply).
Most people have four key areas of spending and each can be slimmed down with a bit of frugal thinking: necessary outgoings such as bills and food costs, recreational spending for entertainment, personal expenses such as clothes and infrequent costs like holidays and home refurbishments. For example, wasted food costs the average household £470 a year, so during ‘Think Thrifty Week’, we’ll be encouraging you to use up existing groceries and avoid luxuries such as takeaways and dining out.
Follow us on Twitter to share your #ThinkThrifty tips.
Home insurance tips
Home insurance can be a bit of a minefield. From estimating the value of your home to choosing the right add-ons, there are many things to consider. Here are some tips to help you choose the right cover:
Minimise your risks – Things like fitting smoke alarms, storing valuables in a safe and installing strong locks and security lights could help to reduce your premiums
Combine cover – Teachers Assurance provides both buildings and contents insurance to make it easier for you to get the cover you need
Don’t just focus on price – The cheapest policy might not provide the level of cover you need, so remember to compare quotes like-for-like
Know your worth – Don’t underestimate the value of your home’s contents
Check what you’re covered for – As well as getting cover for all the usual eventualities, it’s worth asking about things like the contents of your freezer, water leaks and emergency services damage too
Our home insurance has a Defaqto 5 Star rating. You can either request a quote online or call us free on 0800 378 722.
Attend one of our retirement planning seminars
We hold free seminars all over the country to help teachers with their retirement planning. In June, we’ll be visiting Newport, London, Maidstone, Cambridge, Liverpool, Doncaster, Wakefield, Gloucester and Southampton.
Whether you’ve already retired or you’re retiring within the next few years, our seminars will provide you with lots of information and guidance, so you should find them useful.
To attend one of these complimentary sessions, please call our Events team on 0800 652 5075. Alternatively, you can book your place online.
