Harvard’s Health Publication on “How To Boost Your Immune System” advises that to function well, your immune system requires balance and harmony. Because your immune system needs the support of all the other systems in the body, it is important to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Here are some great tips for healthy living that I pulled from this article:
Watch What You’re Putting In Your Body – The article recommends eating fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and foods that are low in saturated fat.
Get moving – regular exercise improves your heart, lungs, and overall health
Avoid smoking – cigarettes are bad for your lungs and affects your immune system.
Maintain a healthy weight – A healthy weight for your gender, height, age and lifestyle will be different for everyone. You can search for “body mass index” to find recommendations for what is healthy based on your individual body. You should also talk to your doctor about what is an ideal weight for your body.
Keep your blood pressure in normal range. Normal blood pressure is 120/80. What’s yours?
If you drink alcohol, drink in moderation. Drinking too much alcohol puts a strain on all your systems and can lead to heart and liver disease.
Go to sleep. Rest is good for the body and not getting enough sleep stresses the body, making your susceptible to illness.
Wash your hands. The Harvard article recommends, “Take steps to avoid infection, such as washing your hands frequently and cooking meats thoroughly.” – I agree!
This article goes on to say that while there is not a proven way to actually “boost” your immune system, these are practical ways to stay healthy. As simple as these steps seem, the truth is, we can all do them. And the great news is, when you do our best to be healthy, you increase your chances of fighting off all kinds of illness, including the cold and flu.
