Mounting student loan debt has gained national recognition as the spotlight covers the plight of the millennial generation in pursuit of higher education. It is not much of a surprise that this rising source of debt gains a bit more attention; after all, the tally has exceeded $1.3 trillion (a common statistic) and has surpassed credit card debt and auto loan debt as a leading source of debt in America.
There are multiple culprits to this trend. College tuition is one of the main contributors as it increases right along with student loan debt; additionally, one could argue that the demand for education and rising population contribute to this issue as well. When the overall cost of tuition is factored in (textbooks, rental space, groceries, etc.), the situation gets worse on the grand scale as well as for every individual in college.
All of this aside, it is clear that there are plenty of catalysts to an issue that is only getting worse. An increased need for student loans causes strain on taxpayers which loops back around and creates more problems for prospective college students coming from a stressed economy. It is clearly a big issue.
Big issues call for big solutions. One such solution was a call for students to start working during college in order to combat the overall cost of attendance. This is definitely a necessity for many people, but picking up a part-time job can be difficult in many areas. In order to solve this dilemma, the Federal Work Study Program was devised to provide on-campus jobs for students. This was a big step in producing jobs for college students, but it still was not enough.
Many universities picked up the slack by offering on-campus jobs that were not affiliated with the Federal Work Study program. These jobs help fill the gap that is left by the Federal Work Study program and the labor markets that are surrounding college towns. These on-campus opportunities are great for students in need of a part-time job to help pay for regular college expenses. On top of this, these part-time workers can start paying off their student loans during college.
Working a part-time job throughout college is hard, but it is extremely beneficial and yields multiply benefits. It teaches valuable lessons in time management, multi-tasking, project planning, and more. It helps pay for typical college expenses such as food and student loans. Above all else, it helps contribute to solving a problem that shrouds higher education.
Using licensed Peterson’s Financial Aid Data from the year 2016, colleges were ranked based on which provided the most non-Federal Work Study job opportunities. Just to clarify, these jobs are provided by the college itself as a form of self-help aid, and the colleges ranked closer to first place provide the more job opportunities on-campus.
