When Scientists Become Politicians
The recent expose of the e-mails from the scientists at the Hadley Climatic Research Unit at Britain’s University of East Anglia, revealing the nefarious nature of their global warming crusade, does far more than damage the credibility of global warming activists. It damages the foundation of one of the last bastions of truth.

Scientist Tells Congress:
Earth in ‘CO2 Famine’
‘The increase of CO2 is not a cause for alarm and will be good for mankind’. Children should not be force-fed propaganda, masquerading as science.
“Award-winning Princeton University Physicist Dr. Will Happer declared man-made global warming fears “mistaken” and noted that the Earth was currently in a “CO2 famine now.” Happer, who has published over 200 peer-reviewed scientific papers, made his remarks during today’s Environment and Public Works Full Committee Hearing entitled “Update on the Latest Global Warming Science.”
.
“Most of the time [CO2 levels] have been at least 1000 (ppm) and it’s been quite higher than that,” Happer told the Senate Committee.
““Earth was just fine in those times,” Happer added. “The oceans were fine, plants grew, animals grew fine. So it’s baffling to me that we’re so frightened of getting nowhere close to where we started.”

“…the eco-apocalypse is utterly without hope of redemption for man or nature…
.
“”On what principle is it,” wondered Thomas Babington Macaulay in 1830, “that when we see nothing but improvement behind us, we are to expect nothing but deterioration before us?” Environmentalism didn’t exist in its current form in Macaulay’s time, or he would easily have discerned its essential pessimism bordering at times on a loathing of humanity. A trip down the environment and earth sciences aisle of any larger bookstore is usually a tour of titles that cover the narrow range from dismay to despair.
“On the surface this is not exceptional. Titles predicting decline, decay, and disaster are just as numerous in the real estate, economics, and social science shelves, though, ironically, not so much in the religion book racks, where one would expect to find apocalypticism well represented. This is an important distinction: unlike the eschatology of all major religions, the eco-apocalypse is utterly without hope of redemption for man or nature.”
.
“Opinion surveys show that the public isn’t jumping on the global warming bandwagon despite a multi-million dollar marketing campaign and full-scale media hysteria. More broadly there are signs that “green fatigue” is setting in. Magazine publishers recently reported that their special Earth Day “green” issues generated the lowest newsstand sales of all issues published in 2008.”

The Lean Blog-Cat Is Amongst The Corn-fed Pigeons Of Agenda Science
.
And the Telegraph’s Christopher Booker says that the Government must be absolutely sure that their data on climate change is accurate.
.
Which may seem a statement too obvious to even bother making; but it is not.
High standards of integrity, men of wisdom, and a commitment to truth, are missing from the halls of power, which instead houses those of a selfish greed for fame (however transitory) and fortune.
Rogues with degrees are abroad amongst us, often running in harness with power-hungry politicians of no integrity and the bitter crew of intellectuals of self hate who would condemn their fellows to a basic misery of life in a giant commune on the way to complete eradication.
But… beneath the mass-propaganda mills a new phenomenon has risen boisterously from within the new world of communications: the web log, now referred to universally as the blog. It communicates what the traditional media often misses, or chooses not to notice or not to publish, giving both the free thinker and the non-partyline toiler a place to display their wares, their concerns, their insights, to the entire world.
Or simply to ask hard questions and note critical doubt.
At present it is the science blogs which are doing this on the question of our time: man-made global warming, and they are doing it successfully because many of their contributors are men of true science scandalized by the corruption of science to agenda, and those equally shocked by the dislocation of sober fact to support grandiose schemes of power and fortune to the detriment of the citizenry.
These blogs are universally important; and powerful.
Note these words from the Christopher Booker article linked below:
.
“When this was queried by a puzzled Anthony Watts, the NSIDC somewhat shamefacedly admitted that a problem had developed with one of its satellites. The data for the previous 45 days was found to be so faulty that it had been withdrawn. But inevitably this provoked the question as to why quality control seemed to be so poor on one of the world’s leading official sources of climate data that it had taken an outside observer to point out that something was wrong.”

“Unfortunately, some educators besides Al Gore have taken liberties with the ice core data. Children’s global warming author Laurie David published the incorrect graph below, which shows that CO2 levels changed prior to the temperature levels. It is difficult to understand how this error could have happened accidentally.”

Mike Campbell comments on Watts Up With That?: “I had to laugh when I saw in a review that David’s book claims that hungry polar bears have been spotted in “Halifax” (the city in Nova Scotia where I live) and “Ontario, Canada” (a province which extends north to Hudson Bay and would therefore be part of the polar bear’s normal range) scrounging through garbage cans.
“Halifax is south of 45 and we do not ever see polar bears.”
.
And Laurie David replies on The Huffington Post in a rather flip manner, and assures readers: “We will correct the illustration in the next edition.” (She does not mention the bears.)

If your children read the first edition you just have to hope they will be so awed by it they snatch for the second edition, too, and their eagle eyes spy the correction immediately.

” A clever fellow was acquainted with the expansive force of steam; he also saw the wealth of wheat and grass rotting in Michigan. Then he cunningly screws on the steam–pipe to the wheat–crop. Puff now, O Steam! The steam puffs and expands as before, but this time it is dragging all Michigan at its back to hungry New York and hungry England. Coal lay in ledges under the ground since the Flood, until a laborer with pick and windlass brings it to the surface. We may well call it black diamonds. Every basket is power and civilization. For coal is a portable climate. It carries the heat of the tropics to Labrador and the polar circle: and it is the means of transporting itself whithersoever it is wanted. Watt and Stephenson whispered in the ear of mankind their secret, that a half–ounce of coal will draw two tons a mile, and coal carries coal, by rail and by boat, to make Canada as warm as Calcutta, and with its comfort brings its industrial power…”

Montaigne’s axiom: “Nothing is so firmly believed as what we least know.”
.
A retrospective for perspective:
.
In the 1970s, “a major cooling of the planet” was “widely considered inevitable” because it was “well established” that the Northern Hemisphere’s climate “has been getting cooler since about 1950” (New York Times, May 21, 1975). Although some disputed that the “cooling trend” could result in “a return to another ice age” (the Times, Sept. 14, 1975), others anticipated “a full-blown 10,000-year ice age” involving “extensive Northern Hemisphere glaciation” (Science News, March 1, 1975, and Science magazine, Dec. 10, 1976, respectively). The “continued rapid cooling of the Earth” (Global Ecology, 1971) meant that “a new ice age must now stand alongside nuclear war as a likely source of wholesale death and misery” (International Wildlife, July 1975). “The world’s climatologists are agreed” that we must “prepare for the next ice age” (Science Digest, February 1973).

But neither that nor the weather deterred Gore from testifying Wednesday before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on the need to pursue a treaty to lower carbon emissions at a United Nations conference in Copenhagen next December.”

“That 1000 year forecast comes with a moneyback guarantee from NOAA. Too bad they don’t offer the same on their seasonal forecasts. the last two winters were forecast to be warm in Alaska and the lower 48 states. Susan can’t help but keep embarrassing herself first with her work on the ozone hole, then the IPCC AR4 report for which she was a Lead Author and now this.”

“Another interesting fact which can be derived from Charles Pierce’s data, is that January temperatures cooled dramatically during the period 1790-1819 – as can be seen in the graph below…

From the Abstract
.
The atmospheric greenhouse effect, an idea that authors trace back to the traditional works of Fourier 1824, Tyndall 1861, and Arrhenius 1896, and which is still supported in global climatology, essentially describes a fictitious mechanism, in which a planetary atmosphere acts as a heat pump driven by an environment that is radiatively interacting with but radiatively equilibrated to the atmospheric system. According to the second law of thermodynamics such a planetary machine can never exist.
