Job description
As a provisional assistant economist, you will be putting your economics training to direct use by making sure policy is informed by the best possible economics analysis. This is an exciting time to be joining the civil service, and you will be advising on policy options, providing vital briefing for ministers or the public, or ensuring the quality and appropriate use of economic statistics.
Posts are available at the departments listed above, and posts will be based mainly in London, with the option also to work in Bristol, Leeds, Newport, Sheffield, Titchfield (Fareham) and York. Roles are available in a varied range of areas such as macroeconomic modelling, policy appraisal, international trade, migration analysis, education and skills, civil and criminal justice or economic statistics.
Successful candidates will benefit from high quality training and on-the-job experience to support post-holders to sit the Government Economic Service Fast Stream and qualify for permanent status.
Criteria
To apply you must already have a first or upper second class honours degree in economics, or a postgraduate degree in economics. At least 50% of the course modules must be in economics. You must have studied both macro and microeconomics to qualify. If you graduated more than 5 years ago, you must give examples in the competency section of the application form of how you have maintained your economics knowledge.
What do government economists do?
Economists are at the heart of decision making in government. As an economist, you will use your economics training to impartially explain, inform, and propose solutions to questions which ultimately influence government policy. As such, the work of government economists can influence the day to day lives of millions of people and help inform some of the major decisions facing the UK over the next few years – regardless of what department you work in.
