Besides soft pretzels, Broadway spectacles, and a legion of yellow Taxi cabs, New York City is also known for its thriving startup community. Silicon Alley has produced some of the biggest startup success stories of the last ten years. Tech unicorns (companies worth $1B or more) such as Zocdoc, Oscar, and WeWork all call the Big Apple their home. And while 2015 was a great year for New York startups, if the last couple months are any indication, 2016 shows no sign of slowing down.

The startups on this list are changing the game in industries like music, e-commerce, and education, and best of all they're all hiring for non-technical positions. Check out the Top 20 startups hiring for non-tech roles, 2016 edition.

1. Bitly

Why they’re awesome: Honestly, nicknames are pretty amazing. You can shorten Maximilian, a name that everyone agrees isn’t cool, by turning it into Max, a name that everyone agrees is AWESOME! With the blink of an eye you can transform boring old Abraham (ughh why’d you invite Abraham he’s such a buzzkill) into fun-loving party-dude Abe (Wooo, Abe I didn’t know you were coming, nice bro!). Rebecca (yawn) can become Becky (YASSS!), and like an unremarkable caterpillar transforming into a majestic butterfly, timid Theodore (Theodore still doesn’t make eye contact with waiters) becomes Ted (Ted rides a motorcycle, wears a leather jacket, and has a sweet catchphrase). Bitly’s a company that does for website links what nicknames do for names -- it makes them funner and more manageable. Don’t believe us? Bitly can turn a hideous web address like http://www.planted.com/blog/blahblahblahbh4owiahtaoa4a494aiehli (Theodore) into a cute tidy link like http://bit.ly/1ramznt (Ted). Besides link shortening, Bitly also enables brands to more effectively track and measure their marketing efforts, a service that is already being used by companies like IBM, ebay, Nike, and BuzzFeed! By shortening nearly half a billion links per month, Bitly’s proving time and time again that shorter is better.

2. Button

Why they’re awesome: Button’s like that one friend in your group that introduces you to all his friends, and then introduces all those friends to his other friends. (He’s sorta like a friend bridge). And Button’s sorta like that bridge but for awesome mobile apps. Basically Button allows apps to integrate features and widgets from other apps. For example: Let’s say you created an app that allows people to find the best cheese shop within a 10 mile radius (Cheesr? Cheesely? Cheez-Itt?). With the power of Button you could integrate your cheese-finding app with ride-finding app Uber! That way your users would be able to order a car to that very cheese shop without ever leaving your app. Pretty nifty right? You could also integrate your app with Yelp so that users could see the ratings and reviews of each cheese shop while they browse. With Button, the possible app-ceptions are endless. If that wasn’t enough, Button-integrated apps experience an 11% increase in time spent for their users which means more engagement and an easier route to monetization. In short, Button heard you like apps so they put an app inside your app so you could app while you app.

3. Chexology

Why they’re awesome: Did you catch that Broad City episode where they work in the coat check at that fancy party for the night (proceeds to go on summarizing the entire episode). No, didn’t see it? ANYWAY, losing your coat is the worst, and it totally reminds you how all around sketchy the current coat check process has become. Tickets could easily disappear in your pocket. Other tickets can fall right off your coat rendering its true ownership unknowable. The whole system is basically playing a twisted game of roulette with your parka hanging in the balance. With their proprietary tech platform, Chexology has streamlined the process making it secure, interactive, and insightful. If you’re hosting an event, you’ve got a million other things to worry about besides the coat check, and if you’re a guest at a fancy soiree you don’t want to spend the whole time worrying about whether you’re going to see your jacket again. Chexology solves both those problems and brings both party-thrower and party-goer some much needed peace of mind. Though “coatchex” is their flagship product, Chexology also provides rental services for phone chargers and headphones, while also streamlining bag checking. Chex it out!

4. Common

Why they’re awesome: When you ask your best friend what their favorite part of freshmen year was, they’ll usually tell you it was all the free t-shirts they got during New Student Orientation (throw back to Library Social tee 2010). Then they’ll be like “wait scratch that” and tell you it was actually meeting all the amazing friends that made frosh year so great (dawwwwwww). Dorms, with their communal spaces and group events are the perfect places for new friendships to take root. Enter Common, a startup banking on the idea that post-grad folks want to be included in a welcoming community just as much as college freshmen. Common is doing its part to end the plague of urban loneliness by offering rentable rooms with communal living spaces. Common homes offer shared kitchens, gardens, and lounges -- an ideal arrangement to foster community bonding. With flexible, month-to-month leases, Common’s an unbeatable choice for folks who want the freedom to plan their futures. The housing startup is so focused on actually building relationships that they host regular talks, house dinners, and other communal events meant to bring neighbors together. Plus, all utilities are included in the rent price including wifi, heating, and AC. Best part? Common homes have washers and dryers ON-PREMISES, which in New York is like being told your apartment comes with a robot butler.

5. Emissary.io

Why they’re awesome: As far as Star Wars characters go Yoda was definitely top-tier (though while we’re on the subject, Admiral Ackbar might be the best Star Wars character of all time!). When Luke meets Yoda on Dagobah, the young Skywalker is well on his way to becoming a Jedi, but he needs that extra push from a tried and true master to really reach his full potential. The business world is a lot like Star Wars, but there are way more Excel Workbooks and only half as many lightsabers. Oftentimes a company’s sales team will be well on their way to closing a deal, like 80% of the way there, but they’ll need an extra push to hit that home run and bring the deal to a close. Emissary.io connects companies with business-world Yodas, people who know their prospects inside and out and are able to work with sales teams to strategize pitches. They’re creating technology that builds the bridge between industry experts and the sales teams that need their guidance. In doing so they’re making it easier than ever “for people and businesses to benefit from each other's experiences.” They’re also backed by some serious heavy hitters in the VC world including investors from Google Ventures, The New York Times, and eBay. Promising future ahead of them they have.

Who: Founded by David Hammer.

Funding: $2M in Seed raised December, 2013.

6. Fancy

Why they’re awesome: Chances are if you’re reading this list you’ve bought something before...Unless you decided to take a respite from humanity by hermitting yourself in the woods (shouts out Walden Pond) and the first person to discover you just happened to hand you this article. Fancy’s a lot about discovery too, but instead of lonely pond hermits you’re discovering awesome stuff to buy on the internet! Getting started is simple. First you create a profile by signing into Facebook, then you tell Fancy what sort of stuff you’re into, and finally BAM you get to scroll through cool pictures of that stuff in a Pinteresty/Tumblry format. Find something you like? “Fancy” it to save it to your page and check it out later. Find something you like enough to buy? You can seamlessly purchase it without even leaving the Fancy platform! Fancy’s an e-commerce startup unlike any other, one that’s going to keep blurring the lines between discovering, browsing, and shopping.

7. Fluent City

Why they’re awesome: Fluent City knows that way too many Americans find themselves stuck in a foreign country sputtering out a barely comprehensible inquiry as to where a bathroom is located, only to have the man they’re speaking to respond in perfect English, “Down the hall to the left.” Many of us would love to learn a foreign language, but don’t know the first thing about getting started. While there are a lot of “do it yourself” low-touchpoint solutions, lots of folks would rather learn the good old fashioned way, with a qualified (human) teacher and a bunch of other students who are as clueless as you are. Learning a language should first and foremost be a social experience. Something fun! NOT something you do alone in your apartment when you run out of episodes of Kimmy Schmidt to watch. Fluent City also provides students with a much more well-rounded learning experience, offering them cultural events which help supplement their in-class lessons. Go to a workshop on German beer, immerse yourself in French cinema, or try your luck at Italian cooking. Most importantly, build the confidence to ask where the bathroom is in a language that’s not your native tongue.

Who: Founded by Sam Maher.

8. Hullabalu

Why they’re awesome: Do you remember what kids books were like when you were growing up? You were probably forced to read some boring picture book with one-dimensional, shoddily drawn characters or (even worse) your teacher had you read some overly dramatic, poorly written (and pictureless) story just to hammer home some droll life lesson you already knew. Kids today have it so much better! Hullabalu is a tech company specializing in next-gen storybooks that kids actually want to read. While they have the usual fixings of traditional stories (things like plot and characters), Hullabalu differentiates itself by being totally interactive. And not interactive like those campy “Choose Your Own Ending” books you had to read when you were a kid. Interactive like you can swipe around on your smartphone or tablet and actually control the plot. The coolest part of Hullabalu is that the stories actually feature engaging, multi-faceted characters. You’ve got your purple protagonist, Pan. She’s a Panda who’s on an epic quest to find her parents and likes “Socks, snacks, and shiny things.” The stories also feature Pan’s friends: a red bunny named Chase, a green fox named Locke Lightwell and a whole menagerie of others. By creating a narrative platform that allows children to read, learn, and play Hullabalu does its part to make storytime not only enriching, but fun too.

9. Jukebox.io

Why they’re awesome: There was once a glorious time in our country’s history when Jukeboxes reigned supreme and deciding what music to play in a bar was a democratic process. People got to request songs they wanted to hear and, as if summoned from the quarters of the divine, those melodies would spring forth from the Jukebox. Sadly that populist participation in choosing dank tunes was not meant to last. Turntables began springing up, giving DJs totalitarian control of a room’s music. We the people went from having an unalienable right to dope vibes to awkwardly screaming into a DJ’s ear that you’d like him to play a cut off the new Justin Bieber album. (Alas, the DJ did not oblige). Jukebox.io is a game changer of a company that allows venues to once again give control of the music back to the people. But don’t worry, you won’t be hitting those big clunky Jukeboxes like you’re a modern day Fonzi anytime soon. Instead users will be able to control song selection using their smartphones and the Jukebox.io app. You and your friends can finally go out and listen to the music that you actually want to listen to (without the DJ playing an endless loop of Ja Rule and Nickleback).

10. KitNipBox

Why they’re awesome: KitNipBox is your cat’s dream come true. Seriously, your cat probably falls asleep and has visions of KitNipBox in between its dream of a swimming pool full of mice and a yarn ball the size of the Epcot globe. Today there are subscription box services for everything! Beauty products, whiskey, clothes, candy, razors, weed, underwear, you name it! (We were going to try to throw one in there that was a joke, but it probably actually exists). With all these subscription boxes out there, it’s about time that one sprung up to service the large community of feline enthusiasts and their whiskered friends. KitNipBox is a monthly box of things your cat can’t get enough of delivered straight to your cat’s house (which is probably also your house). Kitty treats, kitty toys, and yes of course catnip. Besides making cats happy with their paw-sitively amazing boxes, KitNipBox also supports less fortunate cats around the world by donating a portion of their proceedings to over 100 animal welfare organizations nationwide. All this from one company? You’ve got to be kitten us.

11. Lola

Why they’re awesome: Did you know the average woman will use 15,000 tampons and pads in her life? Did you also know that the FDA doesn’t require tampon brands to disclose a comprehensive list of ingredients. Lastly, did you know that no one knows what long-term effects the artificial fibers in tampons may have on women? Well after knowing all that, you’ll probably be pretty happy to know that Lola exists. Lola is company that produces tampons made 100% of hypoallergenic cotton wrapped in BPA-free plastic applicators. Their tampons are all natural, and just as absorbent as the bigger brands (okay fine, we mean Playtex and Tampax you guys). And because they follow a subscription box model, ordering is super easy. First you choose your assortment of 18 tampons where you can pick from light, regular, and super. Then you decide how many boxes you want to order and with what frequency. Once you set up your Lola schedule just sit back, relax, and rest easy knowing you’ll always be stocked. It’s feminine health that’s all-natural, straightforward, and most of all, safe.

12. MeVee

Why they’re awesome: What are some of your fondest memories of the internet? Chances are it’s a funny video of a some intensely cute animal or a viral clip of someone falling in an unlikely (but hilarious) way. Videos are the lifeblood of the social web, smoothly transporting us to a specific moment in a way no other medium can. If a picture’s worth a thousand words, a video’s practically an encyclopedia. MeVee is a company that combines the effortlessness of Snapchat with the permanence of YouTube. It’s the social media live streaming platform that helps us capture those moments that we just can’t help but record. You can go live, record your streams, and post them to MeVee (and the rest of your social networks) in seconds. While you may not get as many views as baby monkey riding on a pig, your friends and family will still appreciate seeing what you’re up to.

Who: Founded by Tomer Dicturel and Ryan Hickman.

Funding: $350K in Seed funding raised September, 2015.

How do you infiltrate? Want to be part of the future of video? MeVee's currently hiring for Content Manager, Community Manager, Social Media Manager roles.

13. Newscred

Why they’re awesome: It’s 2016 and like rainbow bagels, DJ Khaled’s Snapchat, and saying YASSS KWEEN, content marketing is super hot right now. A brand that doesn’t engage in content marketing is like a lone hiker (one who lost the map like 3 miles back) standing atop a mountain screaming into the abyss. No one’s answering because no one can hear you because you’re in the middle of nowhere, dude! Just like our unlucky traveler, brands that aren’t able to get their message out to the masses are in some serious trouble. Newscred is the world’s leading content marketing platform, helping hundreds of top brands create and market meaningful content experiences. They’ve accomplished the herculean task of consolidating the content marketing ecosystem, letting brands select content from licensed publishers, a network of esteemed freelancers, and even its own users. To top it all off, Newscred’s trusted by companies like Barclay’s, Dell, HP, and Pepsi ensuring that each brand presents relevant and engaging content to their users.

Who: Founded by Shafqat Islam, Asif Rahman, and Iraj Islam.

Funding: $42M in Series D raised September, 2015.

14. Paintzen

Why they’re awesome: Scenario: You just went on a date with someone you’re super into, they go back to your apartment and as soon as they walk into your room they run out, too repulsed to stand there a second longer. No, it wasn’t your overflowing laundry bag, the pizza box under your bed, or the fact that your room’s basically the size of a walk-in closet. It was your paint job! Ugly beige peeling from the walls. White splotches scattered in all directions. Uneven brush strokes that make it seem like a 10 year old was contracted for the job. What do you do to make sure your eyesore of a paint job never causes any more undue stress? Paintzen’s got you covered. Paintzen is a startup that allows users to book, schedule, and pay for both home and office painters in a cinch. First you tell Paintzen about your project. Next they’ll instantly give you a quote. Lastly they’ll book your painter and take care of the rest. Seriously like ALL of the rest. Besides painting the room, Paintzen handles setup, prep, and cleanup -- for no extra charge. Plus Paintzen only uses high-quality Benjamin Moore paint, so say goodbye to peeling walls. They even assign you a special project manager to serve as your single point of contact, just in case you have any questions along the way.

Who: Founded by Justin Geller, James Goldman, and Mike Russell.

Funding: $2.83M in venture funding raised April, 2016.

15. Peloton

Why they’re awesome: Peloton’s here to bring you the exercise bike of the future! It shoots laser beams out of its pedals and comes with a Siri-esque artificial intelligence system that actually knows how to answer your questions. It’s also fully conscious, capable of love, and sounds just like Scarlett Johansson. Actually it doesn’t do that stuff (sorry) but it’s still the most innovative exercise bike around. Its frame is made of carbon steel (fancy af). It has a near-silent belt drive (no more getting yelled at for late night workouts...sorry grandma). The Peloton features smooth magnetic resistance (because when haven’t magnets made things better), an ergonomic seat, clip-in pedals, and adjustable padded handlebars that supports you as you go hard, HAM, and Ultra Light Beam. Plus, this Cadillac of exercise bikes comes outfitted with a state of the art touchscreen, one that allows you to access live spin classes from the comfort of your home. So you get all the benefits of a spin class without all the extra sweaty people. Get yourself a Peloton and peddle your way to the future. Laser beams and ScarJo coming in 2020.

Funding: $75M in private equity funding raised December, 2015.

How do you infiltrate? Now hiring for Customer Experience Associates.

Size: ~158 employees according to LinkedIn.

16. Stack Exchange

Why they’re awesome: Part of the downside of the internet is the fact that it gives a loud voice to people who have no idea what they’re talking about. We’ve all had those moments where we’re frantically Googling one of life’s unknowable mysteries at 4am only to wind up on a Yahoo Answers page from 2012. Stack Exchange is a lot like Yahoo Answers but instead of your questions being explained by incompetent dunces, the responses found on Stack Exchange are thorough, insightful, and comprehensive. Most importantly they’re written by people who actually want to help you! Just compare these two different resources on what happens to your dog if it swallows dish soap. Exhibit A: Yahoo. Exhibit B: Stack Exchange. Stack Exchange’s bright shining star however is Stack Overflow, the world’s preeminent resource for developers to find, answer, or ask questions about coding. In the same way that Wikipedia crowdsources encyclopedic knowledge, and Kickstarter crowdsources fundraising, Stack Exchange crowdsources answers to specific user generated questions. They also log the answers in a searchable archive so that future folks don’t need to sweat if they’re Googling life’s enigmas at 4am.

Who: Founded by Jeff Atwood and Joel Spolsky.

How do you infiltrate? Currently hiring for Sales Executive, Sales Ops Coordinator, and Customer Happiness Marketing Manager positions.

17. theSkimm

Why they’re awesome: If you’re like most career-focused millennials you don’t have time to watch CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, and E! all just to get the gist of what’s going on in the world today. You probably also don’t have time to sift through the hundreds of online news sites to read an article that doesn’t even get to the point of the story before the third paragraph (stop burying your leads internet writers!). Eventually you’ll be so uninformed you’ll have no idea what your coworker and/or Tinder date is going on about when they bring up current events and you’ll just have to nod and throw in some vague agreements to avoid seeming like a total clod. Enter theSkimm, a daily newsletter that makes the day’s news fun, informative, and most of all, digestible. TheSkimm only takes five minutes to read and immediately allows you to stand toe-to-toe with your most news-obsessed friends. Skimm when you’re on line at Starbucks (or the place that you go to instead of Starbucks on principle), Skimm when you’re on the bus, heck, even Skimm when you’re pretending to pay attention during that morning meeting (we won’t tell). Regardless of how you Skimm, you’ll be a more informed citizen once you do.

Who: Founded by Danielle Weisberg and Carly Zakin.

Funding: $6.25M in Series A raised December, 2014.

How do you infiltrate? Want to work at theSkimm? They’re currently hiring for a “It’s Handled” Skimm’r.

18. SiteCompli

Why they’re awesome: We’ve all accidentally parked somewhere off limits only to see a big fat ticket on our dashboards hours later. We know, we know. It wasn’t your fault, you just misread the sign that said you’re only allowed to park there on Tuesdays and Thursdays but today is Tuesday but it did say in tiny print that you’re not allowed to park there between 8am and 3pm but then it said that on holidays you can park whenever and you thought Arbor Day might’ve counted as a holiday...and now you have a ticket. Property and building managers have to follow rules just like we do, except instead of decoding one lonesome street sign they have to comply with hundreds of pages of incredibly dense building laws and regulations. They spend hours interpreting the rules around violations, complaints, permits, and inspections so as to avoid massive headaches and even more massive fines. Enter SiteCompli. SiteCompli is a tech startup working to make compliance violations a thing of the past. SiteCompli aggregates compliance data for property owners and alerts them whenever there’s an issue. This allows property owners to avoid paying unnecessary fines and enables them to spend more time fixing problems instead of finding them. Now only if it could tell the rest of us where to park.

Who: Founded by Ross Goldenberg and Jason Griffith.

Funding: No funding information, but SiteCompli has been around since 2008.

How do you infiltrate? Currently hiring for Customer Success Associates, Customer Success Managers, Customer Support Associates, and Sales Operations Associates.

19. Tictail

Why they’re awesome: In 2016 there’s no excuse for a consumer-facing business not to have some sort of online offering. Even that super hipster artisanal birdhouse shop that makes you schedule an appointment 3 years in advance should probably be accessible via a website. Tictail is a company that lets small business owners set up an online store in literally minutes. That place that only sells t-shirts with pictures of other t-shirts on it? Probably on Tictail. That store that exclusively markets shoes made of recycled tire rubber? Probably on Tictail. That one shop that doesn’t sell anything at all but always has a HUGE line in front of it. Yeah, they’re probably on Tictail too. Anyway Tictail’s got over 2.5 MILLION products listed from more than 125 THOUSAND stores. If you’re a business owner looking to expand your online reach or if you’re a consumer looking to feed your closet with exclusive goodies, Tictail’s the startup to watch.

20. Updater

Why they’re awesome: Let’s face it, moving’s the worst! First there’s planning the physical logistics of getting all your stuff from point A to point B. Then there’s the packing up of the heavy boxes, the lifting of the heavy boxes, and the unloading of the heavy boxes. And then once you finish putting the contents of the heavy boxes in their rightful places, you’re still dealing with move-induced shockwaves for months on end. Why? Because you need to switch your utilities account info, your cable bill, your mailing address, and every other paper trail associated with your identity, to your new crib. Before you lose faith and just resign yourself to drifting between abandoned attics for the rest of your life, there is a shining beacon of hope still out there. Updater is a startup that seamlessly transfers all your affiliated utilities accounts when you move. As of now 45 million Americans have saved countless hours switching their information through Updater while real estate agents, property managers, and moving companies have decided to include Updater as part of their services. When you use Updater, you only have to focus on physically moving from place to place which is great news for movers who already have a million things on their plates. Unfortunately you’ll still have to deal with all those heavy boxes though.

Who: Founded by David M. Greenberg.

Funding: $20M in investment funding raised December, 2015.
