Participated in the following OR projects RTCM, Transnet N16Mn, Transnet Richards Bay Port Expansion, KUMBA ZRP, QMM Madagascar. These are all ongoing projects. Date October 2007 to August 2011 Organization Denel Aviation Designation Systems Engineering Manager Duties Responsibilities This position addressed all the aircraft fleets in Denels portfolio Rooivalk, Oryx, Impala, C130, Airbus 400, etc., even though the focus was on Rooivalk and Oryx. The position was responsible for the following disciplines Systems Engineering, Design Engineering, Man Machine Interface, System Safety Analysis, Maintenance Program Development, Project Management, Reliability and Qualification, ILS, Avionics Simulator, and Test Bench. The Rooivalk was certified against DEF STD 970 mainly whilst I was the Systems Engineering Manager. This was an allimportant milestone. I am happy to have contributed to this effort through my reliability, safety, maintenance and lately certification activities. The Oryx Helicopter underwent a midlife avionics update. This Program was subject to a rigorous Qualification and Certification program DEF 970. The nature of the program demanded from the department specific attention to Safety Engineering, equipment Bench testing, system simulation, and Logistic updating studies. In an effort to maintain a Design and Development activity in the Engineering environment of Denel Aviation, I supported the Chief Engineer in the launching of a new product from grass roots. The effort was started by conducting a market analysis, and comparing this with DAs capabilities and skills. It was found that there was a niche for two products an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle UAV, which should be a silent Rotor Wing for surveying security purposes a Light Transport Aircraft LTA in the rugged 15 person transport category. Next I assisted the Chief Engineer by preparing top level specifications used for presentations to DAs management and prospective investors. These presentations were made and capital and support were secured that allowed DA to embark on the projects. I left DA at this point. Date October 2001 to October 2007 Organization Denel AviationDynamics Designation Project Manager RAMS Duties Responsibilities This position was dedicated to the Rooivalk helicopter. As an integral part of the Design activity, I developed and implemented a reliability program, a safety engineering program and a maintainability engineering program. The RAMS program was also used to support the Certification program. To this end the following typical types of activities were performed in each program management, engineering and accounting. Tools like FMECA, FTA, Root Cause Analysis, Prediction, Preliminary and System Safety Analysis, and specific Logistic Evaluations such as Spares requirement analysis were used on a continuous basis. A Failure Reporting and Corrective Action System FRACAS was developed on Access and implemented to support the above activities and tool application. The Life Cycle Costs and Total Costs of Ownership programs were calculated using proprietary programs and excel spread sheets. These programs used primarily the information collected and fed into the Logistic Support Analysis database, and the mission profiles as defined by the clients. I was also responsible for the development and implementation of the Rooivalk Maintenance Plan. This plan was developed in accordance with MSG3. The plan was developed at three levels O, I, and D, and addressed systems and components, and was both flight hours and calendar based. An important characteristic of the Maintenance Plan is that this is a living plan. By creating a Maintenance Review Board MRB, and using the feedback from the FRACAS system, this Plan is updated on a regular basis. Date March 2001 to October 2001 Organization Ogma Designation Projec Manager Assessor to the Board of Directors Duties Responsibilities Assessment of the organization, recommendations, and progress reporting to the Board of Directors, regarding the reorganization, training, and improved methods of work. organize for designproject work identifying suitable training organizations and software for RAMS developing a Project Management practice prepared a training schedule for those areas found wanting secure the approval of the Board for the implementation of the proposed actions prepared the training material for ILS Date August 1998 to February 2001 Organization Denel Aviation Designation Quality Systems Manager Duties Responsibilities Providing support functions to the Product Managers Quality Assurance, Configuration Management, Product Safety, Information Technology, Technical Documentation, Technical Libraries, Technical Training, and Health and Safety. Planning for all the support functions, long term strategy, and budgeting Maintenance of the ISO 9001 certification Maintenance of the 5 star NOSA certification Health and Safety Implementation of a Continuous Improvement Process Programme I travelled overseas and locally to ensure the transfer of technology in the fields of Quality, Reliability, Maintainability, Safety and Logistics and Information Technology and to assist our Engineering and Marketing teams in their promotion efforts Date August 1993 to August 1998 Organization Denel Aviation Designation RAMS Engineering Manager Duties Responsibilities Established the Reliability, Availability and Maintainability Section. Prepared the Reliability Plan and the Maintainability Plan. Developed the specification for a RAMS database Supervised other engineers populating the RAMS database Developed a specification for a Failure Reporting, Analysis and Corrective Action SystemFRACAS Developed a methodology for the calculation of spares Established the Work Groups, and Engineering Steering Committee for the approval of the Maintenance Plan Prepared the Logistic Sections of product Specification which was a publication issued by the Program Office. An important aspect of this work was the continuous contact with the prospective client specifications for development and production are consistently evolved from the conceptual phase until the production phase. I was deeply involved in the preparation of Marketing material for the promotion of our products Date September 1991 to July 1993 Organization Simera Designation Reliability Manager Duties Responsibilities My main contributions were the risk analysis in terms of total project feasibility, the logistic analysis proposal and the reliability and maintainability studies. Date April 1986 to August 1991 Organization Atlas Aircraft Corporation Designation Logistic and Quality Manager Duties Responsibilities It was my responsibility to prepare an Integrated Logistic Support Plan ILSP for our main products all the traditional ILS disciplines were addressed Maintenance, Manpower, Computer Resources, Facilities, Spares, Technical Documentation, Training, RAM, Transportation, and PHST My role included implementing a Quality Assurance System in the Design Environment. I developed a manual reflecting all quality procedures and practices. Activities such as Quality Planning, RAMS Planning, Contract Review, FMECAS, FTA, Reliability Critical Items List, Sneak Circuit Analysis, Maintainability Analysis, were developed and implemented. Date January 1986 to April 1986 Organization JCI, Kroostad Designation Quality Consultant Duties Responsibilities I was hired to help identify this fabrication companys manufacturing quality problems and to propose solutions to alleviate those problems. This entailed an appraisal of the companys management procedures as well as a thorough examination of the shop floor fabrication techniques and standards relating to measuring, storing, cutting, bending, welding, shot blasting and painting, mostly. My findings and recommendations were presented to management at the end of my brief. Many of my recommendations were subsequently implemented Date May 1981 to December 1985 Organization Circle Pumps Designation Quality Manager Duties Responsibilities I was responsible for the implementation of a quality system modelled on SABS 0157 ISO 9000 series, part 2. I developed a quality manual, and introduced a system of documented corrective action. The QA department that I headed performed supplier quality assurance, receiving inspection, process quality control, pump performance testing and final inspection. I was also responsible for the performance evaluation of new pump models and for the solving of problems experienced by customers in their pumping systems. This was of great help in introducing improvements in our products. Date August 1975 to April 1981 Organization Haggie Rand Designation Head of Quality Assurance Duties Responsibilities I started in the laboratory, performing tests on the raw material used in the manufacturing of sisal and steel rope. As I become more experienced, I was transferred to the quality control department, which was involved in the quality control of the wire manufacturing drawing process. Eventually I was promoted to head of quality assurance, and I was responsible for the development and implementation of procedures modelled on SABS 0157, part 1. At this stage, the department staff of quality technologists numbered a total of 11. An important part of our work was the development of project quality plans and their auditing.
