North Burleigh SLSC took no prisoners this weekend to take out their fourth consecutive National IRB Championship.
Kiama Downs SLSC took out second and Caves Beach SLSC came in third.
A 1.5 – 2 metre swell rolled in, the Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB) motors were humming and our lifesavers put on some amazing racing for the crowd down at Mollymook Beach, on the South Coast of NSW.
The surf conditions ensured that every crew put all their lifesaving skills into action.
“The IRB Championships are a unique as they not only put surf lifesavers into simulated rescue conditions and is a competition based on real lifesaving skills; but they are also the only surf lifesaving sport that utilised a power craft rescue device” said Shane Knight, SLSA’s National Sports Manager.
“The venue was ideal for IRB racing and offered testing surf conditions to test the skills of the crews and lead to a lot of close finishes” said Rick Wright, Chair of the SLSA Championships Committee.
“Watching the crews compete and demonstrating the high level of skill they have is a great reminder of what good hands the public are in when they visit one of our 313 patrolled beaches.”
Well over 600 competitors, officials and coaches from over 40 clubs contributed to this weekend’s event.
