TITLE: Residential Education and Student Housing Director

SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Work Study Students, supervision of Student Life Coordinator, Resident Assistants and possibly more personnel as department grows

Job Summary: The Residential Education and Student Housing Director position is a 12 month, full-time, live-in, professional staff position within Student Affairs.

Reporting to the Vice President of Student Affairs the position provides oversight to a comprehensive and intentional student-focused program for the residential complex and all student life related activities and programs. The position has immediate supervision of a potential staff made up of Residential Education Assistants, Volunteer Coordinators, and indirect supervision of any other Student Leaders/Ambassadors. The Residential Education and Student Housing Director will design and implement engaging co-curricular, non-credit programs and activities focused on building leadership capacity and a vibrant, inclusive student body. Through the development and enforcement of clear and transparent policies and risk management strategies, the director evaluates and establishes programs and events, recommends and implements changes and administers policy development. Further, the director maintains a visible professional presence on campus and is actively engaged in the creation and support of several large scale campus-wide events; serves as a role model and facilitator to student leaders; supports the development and maintenance of student-driven clubs and organizations; implements co-curricular leadership; promotes student and organizational excellence and best practices grounded in student development theory; and advocates on behalf of student leaders and organizations. The position is charged with being a programmatic liaison for areas, including but not limited, to Intramurals, Library programming, student life programming, tutoring service, athletic department, clubs and other student engagement programs including the First Year Experience.

It will be necessary for the RESH Director to be aware of and proficient in addressing the 10 areas delineated in the Professional Competency Areas for Student Affairs Educators (2015) developed by ACPA, NASPA and CAS. The 10 professional competency areas lay out essential knowledge, skills and dispositions expected of all student affairs educators, regardless of functional area or specialization within the field

The position is responsible for chairing a Residential Education committee and provides assistance with system-wide collateral processes, which include Student Leader selection, training, recognition, student recruitment and retention, professional development, advising, and diversity initiatives. The position also coordinates the Community Standards Board and Student Conduct Board in their work with student related concerns or actions. The individual will also be asked to serve on appropriate committees with the IES structure. All Clery/Title IX/VAWA and related Federal Guidelines that fall under Residence Life, Student Affairs, and campus safety will be reported and maintained by the Director.

The position will require careful implementation of programming that addresses or utilizes the Core Competencies established by ASPA/NASPA.

Since the responsibilities of the position requires the person to be available at varied hours, a two bedroom apartment style living quarters located within the in the residence complex will be provided (furnishings available). All utilities, Internet, cable TV and local phone will also be provided. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Supervision/Student Life

Select, train, supervise, and evaluate Assistants and other personnel as funding allows, including Student Leaders.

Meet regularly with supervisees on an individual and group basis, while indirectly overseeing student staff meetings and functions.

Provide training and ongoing professional development for staff utilizing current research based residence life theory.

Direct day-to-day operations of the residential community and functional area.

Assist in the development and proper interpretation of policies and procedures among staff and students.

Serve as a liaison to Administrative Services, Enrollment Management, Accounting, and Facilities staff regarding resident management.

Chair a Residential Education committee and provide leadership to an assigned collateral process.

Maintain an area budget and approve staff expenditures in accordance with purchasing guidelines.

Work to advance DCC’s mission statement and strategic plan through participation in goal setting, program review, program implementation, and assessment efforts.

Directs and assists with the development and production of informational materials pertaining to student activities including the campus wide student activities/college event calendar, student news, promotional brochures and press releases.

Assist in designing and sustaining first year student life programming model using core competencies from ACPA/NASPA with input from Student Life Programming Director, Student Life Coordinator, Academics, Enrollment Management, Library Resources, Human Resources, and Administration

Emergency and Crisis Response

Take part in a 24/7 on-call duty rotation along with other residence/student life staff.

Respond to emergency situations and assist in resolving resident concerns and needs.

Serve as a liaison with all DCC service areas and local law enforcement, mental health services and emergency personnel.

Share responsibility in maintaining health, fire, and safety standards. (Safety Committee)

Take reasonable and prudent actions to eliminate identified hazards.  Ensure employees/students receive appropriate safety training and foster a workplace safety culture.

Residential Learning

Oversee the implementation of community initiatives in accordance with current research based residence life theory.

Oversee the development of a community and educational environment that encourages student engagement, positive relationships, and student success.

Oversee the development of community standards that address, Learning Engagement & Leadership, Student Equity and Diversity, and various other social and academic issues.

Oversee the implementation of community initiatives that address service learning, community service, personal and professional development and mental health.

Provide leadership in the planning and implementation of campus wide student activities, clubs and organizations including but not limited to ASB, the Library, Athletics, Coffee Shop, Campus Store, and student clubs

Student Conduct

Respond and process alleged policy violations as reported by staff, students, law enforcement, or community members.

Maintain due process and a learning-centered philosophy when sanctioning and engaging in the conduct process.

Review, revise and implement Student Conduct procedures and appeal process as necessary.

Create Community Standards Board (name may change) – a student run board that addresses community standards within the living complex.

Community Relations

Maintain close communication and positive relationships with residents, students, law enforcement and professional staff.

Coordinate and represent the Residential Education and Housing team on committees, recruitment activities, or projects as assigned.

Researches and implements emerging technologies; creates and manages the campus wide internal communication system to promote student activities, programs and services.

Develops departmental goals and objectives, operations and processes, and works with community resources to develop opportunities for students.

Physical Requirements:

Occasional lifting of objects up to 20 pounds

Subject to standing, walking, sitting, bending, reaching, kneeling, pushing and pulling

Work is performed in a standard office environment; some outside work in during events and activities, patrol of the residence complex.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

Minimum Qualifications: Applicants must demonstrate the potential ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined in the position description. Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. Qualified applicants should have or be able to prove the following:

Bachelor’s degree required.

Master’s degree is required in higher education administration, Student Personnel/Student Affairs Administration, Counseling or a related field.

At least two years previous progressive and significant experience at the collegiate level to include managing large-scale campus events as well as overseeing a complete array of fiscal and operational complexities associated with residential education, student activities, program planning required.

Demonstrated knowledge of current and emerging principles within Student Affairs and Housing & Residential Education.

Ability to multi-task and remain organized in a high energy and fast paced department.

Knowledge of sound fiscal and ethical budgetary practices.

Possess a student-centered philosophy and approach to work.

Display an understanding of enrollment management basics, including strategic planning and research.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master’s degree in College Student Personnel/Student Affairs Administration or a related field.

One year post-masters experience.

Demonstrated supervision, organization, planning, group dynamics, human relations and effective communication skills also required.

Demonstrated experience working with a diverse student population and engaging students and staff on issues of diversity and social justice.

Demonstrated record of successful administrative leadership and experience in supervision of support staff, administration, organization, and planning.

Demonstrated experience leading student staff teams.

Previous experience advising student organizations/teams/boards.

Demonstrated experience with student conduct, crisis intervention, and emergency response.

Ability to sustain communication with diverse groups, anticipate problems, reconcile conflicts and maintain a strong philosophical base for student engagement.

Experience analyzing and resolving conflict, building teams, and managing group dynamics.
