KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Alvin Kamara emerged as one of the most versatile backs in Tennessee football history last season, setting a program record with 312 all-purpose yards in a 45-38 double-overtime loss at Texas A&M.
NFL analyst Mike Mayock mentioned Kamara as a potential first-round pick, but Matt Waldman of the Rookie Scouting Portfolio “Boiler Room” provided evidence that Kamara lacks the judgment of a truly great back.
ESPN’s Todd McShay projected Kamara as a first-round NFL pick in his Mock 2.0 draft.
Tennessee’s 45-34 loss to Vanderbilt, in particular, provided examples of Kamara failing to get the most out of plays and find the down-and-distance marker on fourth down.

Waldman penned in his article that Kamara is “a dynamic space player,” but he unlikely will be ranked in his top 10 running backs because of his ball security issues and decision making.
Waldman’s close study is nothing that NFL teams considering Kamara won’t see for themselves, but the Norcross, Ga., product produced many other highlights this season.
Kamara, playing in a knee brace, had 69 yards and 2 touchdowns on 10 carries in the Vanderbilt loss, in addition to making a team-high 8 catches for 72 yards and another touchdown.
Kamara played two seasons with the Vols after transferring in from Hutchinson (Kansas) Community College, having started his collegiate career with a redshirt season at Alabama.
Kamara is among the six Tennessee players that have been invited to participate in the NFL combine in Indianapolis (Feb. 28-March 6).
Waldman, it’s worth noting, did another “RSP Boiler Room” 15-minute video showing Kamara’s balance and agility (below).
