It was a colorful fifth inning for South Carolina baseball on Sunday, leading to coach Chad Holbrook being ejected.

With one out and the bases loaded, pitcher Adam Hill fielded a slow chopper from Wright State’s Matt Morrow and reached out to tag him. First base umpire John Puma ruled Morrow safe, which brought Holbrook racing out of the dugout to dispute the play that gave Wright State a 3-1 lead.

The umpires huddled and discussed the call, upholding the safe ruling and bringing Holbrook running out of the dugout again. He was immediately thrown out.

On the previous play, shortstop Madison Stokes fielded a grounder and threw wide of first with first baseman Riley Hogan stretching fully to catch it. Puma initially ruled Wright State’s Kevin Whatley was out, but after a dispute from Wright State coach Jeff Mercer, the call was overturned and Whatley was ruled safe.

The ejection is Holbrook’s first of the season.

Hill escaped the inning without any more damage, getting Zach Weatherford to pop out before he struck out JD Orr.
